Hello have looked for years for my great grand mother`s birth ,to no avail. Wonder if any one can help ,or point me in the right direction ,any help greatly appreciated Her name was Mary Ellen Southry ,but many spellings on this name Father to Mary Ellen was a French man ,one Henry Sontrin a boat builder Acoording to census she was born in Blyth Northumberland, date of birth about 1845 Many thanks for any information Doris, membership number 6933

Hi, I thought I'd give my tuppenceworth on this. Looking at the birth index that was mentioned earlier - if you read down the page and onto the following pages you will see that it is in fact an L and not an S so the name is Lowry in this instance - it goes Lowry, loyd, lucas etc, I know it does look like they are S. So this doesnt seem to be the birth. The family I have been looking at are Henry and Sarah Southry (as you say, various spellings) liviing in Bishopwearmouth. He is a boatbuilder born in France. They are to be found in 1851 transcribed as Southall and have a brother in law with them called Samuel Wilson. This made me search for a marriage of Henry to Sarah Ann Wilson - and I found one to Henry Sotrine which is pretty close to the name Doris gives as her Great Grandmother's father. This marriage is in 1848 though - and they do not have a Mary with them in any of the census I've found. Of course she could be elswhere and if she is their daughter then perhaps she was born later than 1845 - or was illegitamate and perhaps registered as Wilson - or perhaps she could have a different mother altogether and the mother never married Henry Sotrin/e? Of course I could have the wrong family altogether - but he is a boatbuilder born in France and the marriage in 1848 does give the names Sotrine and Wilson. Hope I havent confused anyone.
