To Listers: Please could someone with a findmypast subscription look at the newly released Chelsea Army Pensioners list for James MELROSE, born Felton, Northumberland, England, baptised at Longframlington Presbyterian Chapelry on 9 June 1760. He is listed in WO97/1250 as a pensioner . He served in the Royal Artillery from 1778 to perhaps 1781. Discharged at age of 21. He married Margaret Robson at Felton, Northumberland, England via banns in the parish church at Felton on 15 May 1783 and they had these children, Mary, 2 Mar 1784; John, 30 Apr 1786; Margaret, 23 Jun 1788; Jane, 11 Oct 1790; James, 12 Nov 1792; Elizabeth and Thomas, twins, baptised 1 Dec 1795, Elizabeth died 19 Apr 1796. Thomas died at Dublin, Ireland on 16 Feb 1834. (these are baptism dates not birth dates, all from the old parish records) I really want the images and the text from the records so can someone email me off list if possible? Thank you very much for your help in breaking this old block wall. I really do not know where my MELROSE family came from but have suspected the borders in Scotland. My great grandfather was Hugh Hudson Melrose, a son of John MELROSE and Hannah HUNTLEY. John's father was the James MELROSE we are seeking more information about. They all lived at Felton from avt. 1760 until 1880. They are mentioned in the Newcastle Courant newspaper hosting flower shows in the 1840's. The inn or pub was known as the WIDDRINGTON ARMS . Another son of John & Hannah's, William Edward Melrose, married Isabella Huntley, and they lived at Amble in Northumberland. He was a butcher and a grocer. Thank you all for any help. Wendell H. The area around Blyth and Bedlington is new territory for me. One of my ancestors William Prike sailed up from Cley in Norfolk and by 1851 was a mariner living in Boca Chica, Cambois. What is the local pronunciation of these interesting places? The Enumeration description for 1861 offers a clue, 'Bogie Cheekey'. Some of his census addresses were in High Pans (Panns). I understand that originally this was an area where salt was obtained through evaporation. Were houses built there subsequently? John Buckley from Lancaster (in the south)

I really want to get my hands on the parish registers for Belsay and Bolam around 1775. Can anyone tell me whether these are available anywhere? CD-ROMs? Microfiche? Book form? Anything?
I am trying to find a photo of my great grandfather, any photo, I have a suitcase full of photos from my late grandmother, and don't know which is my great grandfather. There were no obvious photos of a Coldstreamer (I have posted on The Great War forum you mention and ruled out the uniformed photos I have) He had a military funeral in Gateshead after 16 years service with 2 medals and 5 bars, with a contingent from the DLI (despite him being a Coldstreamer) performing a gun salute, it made the local paper, and had two photos from the funeral (none of him alive), which based on other funerals of the day appears to be quite unusual. I have the military/pension records have checked the local papers, know all about where he served and battles etc the pension details, the dependents etc, have the death certificate. I know his chest size, he had "slight varicose veins on both legs", height, etc where and when he was shot, and that he made it home alive, I know a 14 strong firing party. fired three volleys over the coffin under the command of Lieut H V Chisholm, heading the cortege. The buglers present were Simmons and Bosomworth. Father Jacobs of ST Josephs conducted the service. He had a large number of wreaths including one from the Naval Inspection Department Newcastle (I am yet to figure out why) Jack Dear Jack, You might of already done this, but have you contacted the Local Coldstream Guards Association? If not http://www.shinycapstar.com/contacts.htm#8assoc scroll to the bottom of the page where there is contact address. There is branches in Newcastle & Ashington . I would of thought that they might have a record of him, or even a photograph. Or write to the http://www.theguardsmuseum.com/ they have all the guards records. If you do not mind me asking, what medals was he awarded & which of these were the 5 bars attached. John little.blobby2@btinternet.com

If it is just Regimental History about the 4th. Bn. in WW1 then try sites http://www.1914-1918.net/coldguards.htm photos of the 4th. Bn. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sunnybrook100/1502437743/ Information on all Bns http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/regiment002.htm Or you could join this list which is very good & helpful britregiments@yahoogroup.com or try join the Great War Forum http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php Or post the question on the list & one of the listers, might have the information you require. John, Many thanks, somehow the presence of a Branch in Newcastle and Ashington managed to slip under my radar for the past 3 years (on and off). That will be my first port of call. One of the guys on GWF interpreted his medal card for me, however since updating the website i can't access my old posts (nor PMs) on that website currently, so can;t get the exact wording but in an email around the same time to Gateshead Cemetery a few years ago i wrote: "Laurence Allen is mentioned in the supplements 1914-15 star and And the QSA bars Driefontein, Diamond Hill, Belfast and cape colony The Silver war badge list 49, 1036 Pte Lawrence Allen, joined 22/8/14 , discharged 9/8/15 - GSW left fore arm and head" and he was only the same height as my mom! The newspaper report at the time also agrees, but I am not a military expert hence I got the excellent and knowledgable guys on GWF to explain this to me, and also rule out the uniforms of the other armed forces heroes in my grans suitcase, but none were of any known relatives' Corps Many, many thanks for the pointer for the local branch, I feel a bit embarrassed that somehow this slipped me by, but am equally excited as i feel this is has a much higher likelihood of success! My dad's brother was in the Coldstream Guards in WW1, his medal card gives his date of entry as 15th Dec 1915 but it doesn't state which Battalion he was in. He had a large number of wreaths including one from the Naval Inspection Department Newcastle (I am yet to figure out why) Despite all this fantastic information on this hero, I don't have a photo, I have such a mental picture of my G Grandfather, but would really like to know what he looks like I know I am very lucky and many people just have a photo and not this kind of detailed information, but I would just like to know what he looked like, and so hopefully recognise him in the photos I have. And was hoping that there might be some friends who he signed up with in the area, and their descendants might have some photos they could copy for me. Am simultaneously trying the Coldstreamers nationally too. Long shot? Yup, but am aiming for the stars and might just hit the moon. Cheers for any pointers Jack --- On Sun, 1/8/10, John Gallon <little.blobby2@btinternet.com> wrote: > From: John Gallon <little.blobby2@btinternet.com> > Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] Relatives in the 4th Btn Coldstream Guards? > To: topoisomer@yahoo.com, DUR-NBL-L@rootsweb.com > Date: Sunday, 1 August, 2010, 12:54 > > Hi all, > > Another long shot, but this seems to be one of the two > best places to start. > > Does anyone know if they have ancestors from the NE > who were in the 4th Battalion Coldstream guards? > (1915-1918) > > Cheers > > Jack > > Dear Jack, > > You do not mention the reason why you want Listers to > contact you whose ancestors were in 4th Bn.
