You seem to have missed the point entirely Lee No one was complaining at your generous offer but the only one to suffer would be *you* if you had your subscription cut off On every list on every day there are people who help others, why don't you join the rest and try and help where you can Join a few more lists and I am sure you will come across examples on a daily basis where you can lend a hand Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > To all. > > I appologise sincerely for offering my services to do free census look ups > this purely was only to help others if i have upsert others because of > this I am sorry and will be withdrawing my offer of help as of this moment > no lookuops have been done. > > Lee

I quote from the Terms & Conditions of one major supplier:- "We can terminate your access to the Website if you breach our Fair Usage Policy for subscribers, breach these Terms & Conditions or if we cannot take a payment which is due "You can only use the Services and the Records for your PERSONAL family history research and not for commercial purposes, or to provide lookups for others." Nor is it just census returns that are covered by these sort of Terms & Conditions. You will find that family history societies that produce CDs, books, fiche, etc, plus other suppliers of genealogical data, also have a similar statement in the licence you automatically accept when you purchase materials from them. I advise you not to be blase about this and think it doesn't matter! I am certain the time will come when suppliers start enforcing their legal rights, just as online music providers are actively pursuing those pirates who download music illegally. I am sorry also if I am being cynical, but you demonstrate your naivety when you talk about "having completed my tree to a satisfactory standard". I have been in this business for 35 years and still am nowhere near completing my own family tree and I am certain this applies to just about everyone here! Perhaps you'd tell us the secret? You say you are new to this list and I cannot help wondering how many lists you have posted your look-ups offer to? I think I should caution you, gently, that the major suppliers of census and other data have observers who monitor the mailing lists for just this kind of message. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." "You must agree to these Terms & Conditions if you use the Website or make a Purchase from us 12.4 You agree not to use or allow the Services to be used for or by any third party to access, or view any Records or download any material or content of any Records, whether on a paid or gratis basis, or to perform “lookups” of records on behalf of a third party." Hi Lee I applaud your offer of help to others but would just point out that the 1911 at least has terms and conditions attached to it that forbid look ups and may result in termination of your subscription The same applies to the other census if from the same supplier How anyone can claim to have completed their family tree is another matter of course <g> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > I'm new to this list but i have completed my tree to a satisfactory > statndard and have access to all English Census records 1841-1911. > I'm willing to look up and send orriginal records please email me > personally at : lee.henderson76@hotmail.co.uk > > Cheers, > Lee

According to my father's marriage certificate, dated 1919, he, and his bride-to-be, were living in or at the "Old Stone Buildings", in the parish of Dunston, in the Registration District of Durham North Western, in the County of Durham. Can anyone help, please, with identifying where the "Old Stone Buildings" might have been and why they were called that? I've been unable to find any mention on the Internet. TIA John
-----Original Message----- From: Janet Rice [mailto:jandg.whince@talk21.com] Sent: 24 October 2010 21:50 To: 'Mary Newbery' Subject: RE: [DUR-NBL] Cliff House, Amble Mary you wrote to the list about Cliff House in Amble about Sarah Ann Lennon (Linnen) Sarah Ann Lennon Born c.1866 North Seaton always claimed to have been brought up at Cliff House, Amble. The probable censuses for her childhood don't seem to bear this out although a lot can happen between 10 year intervals. Having been born and bred in Amble I decided to have a bit more of a look at this one as I know that Cliff House was eventually divided amongst quite a lot of households. Roy has said that it is likely that Sarah is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Linnen (living in Radcliffe on the 1871 census). By 1881 Elizabeth is a widow living in Amble with her sons, BUT, in 1891 she has remarried and is living in Cliff House (RG12, Piece 4262, Folio 40 page 74). Her husband is George Robinson, a retired pilot, 35 years her senior, her sons are still with her, named Linnen. As with a lot of family memories, there is usually a bit of fact mixed in with the story! Hi everyone, whilst checking out a marriage for one of my extended BROUGH family here in Australia, came across this entry. South Yarra Church of Christ Marriages. Best wishes, Mary < The 1881 census on CD-ROM has a very useful facility for searching with keywords under the link "Neighbors - Advanced query" (American spelling of Neighbours). This reveals that in 1881 the address shown as "South Link Cliff House", Amble (I take it this is what you mean), was occupied by the following..... BENJAMIN MATTHEWS, 47, Trinity Pilot Lightkeeper, his wife Margaret, 49, their four children and a nephew. GEORGE ROBINSON, 70, Pilot, and his daughter Jane, 22. If you want to check out the online census (assuming you don't have the CD version), the reference is: RG11, piece 5120, folio 127, page 72. In 1881 Sarah A Lennon, 16, was a live-in servant to a family called WOOD, headed by Philip T. S. Wood, 32, slater and plasterer employing eight men, at Byron St, Amble (ref: RG11, piece 5120, folio 108, page 34. In 1871 the surname appears as LINNEN (assuming Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth) and the family were at Hauxley. I checked the image and that is quite clearly the spelling, Sarah A being born at North Seaton. Also in 1871, Benjamin MATTHEW (sic) and family were at Cliff House then, as was George Robinson, his wife and daughter; plus a family headed by William TURNBULL and another headed by Jno (sic) MURPHY. All the male heads were pilots except Murphy who was a draper-grocer. You can do an address search with Findmypast in 1871 by entering Cliff House and Amble. Ref: RG10, piece 5170, folios 59 and 60, pages 44 and 45. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." Dear Listers, Sarah Ann Lennon Born c.1866 North Seaton, always claimed to have been brought up at Cliff House, Amble( the old Coast Guard House) that stands so prominently above the small beach to the side of the South Pier. The probable censuses for her childhood don't seem to bear this out although a lot can happen between 10 year intervals. Does anyone know who the successive occupiers of Cliff House were in the years from 1871 onwards? I suppose they could have been relatives or close friends of Sarah Ann. Best wishes, Mary
Dear Listers, Very many thanks to Jean, Steve and Jenny who were an enormous help in trying to find more about Sarah Ann Lennon. Apparently she always claimed to have been brought up at Cliff House, Amble( the old Coast Guard House) that stands so prominently above the small beach to the side of the South Pier. The probable censuses for her childhood don't seem to bear this out although a lot can happen in 10 year intervals. Does anyone know who the successive occupiers of Cliff House were in the years from 1871 onwards? I suppose they could have been relatives or close friend sof Sarah Ann. Best wishes, Mary
Hi Mary, I found a possible entry in 1871 for Sarah A Linnen. Ref. RG10 piece 5171 folio 13 page 20 Hauxley NBL Address Long Row Radcliff village Thomas Linnen 35 occ. Coalhewer Elizabeth wife 29 Sarah A. dau. 5 Ellen dau. 3, John son 2 mths. But! I found a death on FreeBMD for a Thomas Linnen aged 47 at Alnwick reg. district Sept. Qtr. 1879 volume 10b page 195 Though the age at death of 47 in 1879 does not fit with the age of 35 in the 1871 census, unless someone made an error with the age, by quite a wide margin, in one or other of these records. Alnwick reg. district took in Hauxley at the time. Given that the surname is Linnen in the death entry above I suspect that the above census family might not be your Lennon's under a different spelling of their name. Something else I found on FreeBMD is a birth in June Qtr. 1863 for a Sarah Ann Lennon Liverpool reg. district volume 8b page 109. I made the above search for the full name Sarah Ann Lennon between 1860-1870 but without selecting any county or registration district, so countrywide this is the only result I got for this name during that 10 year period on FreeBMD. Could it be that Sarah Ann was born in Liverpool but then, before she was old enough to know any different, the family moved to North Seaton where she then remembered growing up. Once she was working as a servant, in 1881, she might give her employer her place of birth as the place she remembered living as a small child, not knowing her true place of birth? Were her parents Irish? could it be that they arrived in Liverpool from Ireland and Sarah Ann was born there before the family moved on? Liverpool being the most commonly used port for anyone coming from Ireland. I could not find a birth on FreeBMD for any Sarah Len* between 1860-1870 born Morpeth reg. district. I used the * wildcard with the fist 3 letters of the surname so that I might get all variants of the spelling. Morpeth reg. district took in North Seaton at this time. Making the same name search for the same year span but searching with the County of Northumberland, no reg. district selected. I only got up 2 results Sarah Lennox at Newcastle Upon tyne March Qtr. 1867 volume 10b page 122 Sarah Lenwick at Tynemouth Sept. Qtr. 1868 volume 10b page 160. Making the same search again but chagning the county to County Durham I got several results of variant names but not one Lennon amongst them. Perhaps if you give the rest of us what you know of Sarah Ann, her parents and any names for her siblings that you might have we might have more chance of finding her for you in the 1871. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. <<> I wonder if anyone could locate Sarah Ann Lennon on the 1871 census. She was born circa 1863 at North Seaton, Northumberland. By 1881 she is in service so not with her family of origin.>>
