If you go to http://tinyurl.com/37urlkf it shows the area of New Gateshead as it is now on Google Maps. Some of the original streets are still there, e.g. Nixon Street, Hawks Street, and Albany Road. The area was called Salt Meadows on later maps. In the 1851 Census New Gateshead is in District 10, from HO107 Piece 2402 Folio 640 Page 9 to HO107 Piece 2402 Folio 643 Page 15. It comes after Hawks Lane. On the 1894-1899 map the inn on Hawks Street is the "New Gateshead Inn", there is also a school. There were no street names in New Gateshead in the 1850s. I have recently acquired a copy death certificate of my 3xg-grandmother Rosanna McConnell. She died of Cholera (30 hours certified) on 29 Sept 1853. Her place of death was "New Gateshead" & the residence of the Informant, Charles McConnell, present at the death (presumably her husband), was "New Gateshead, Gateshead". I have Googled & tried GENUKI for New Gateshead, without success. Can anyone inform me of the location of New Gateshead, was it an area of Gateshead or a specific site? It seems to me rather vague that a street was not specified. John Catterson High Wycombe

Hello, I have recently been sent a photograph showing two men in evening dress. The man on the right is my cousin (twice removed) Robert Etheridge Thompson. They were an act called “Waldof and Bliss” who used to play the Empire and other Theatres. We believe they were singers. Robert later changed his name surname to Bates. I was wondering whether anyone has any information on this act, or could point me in the right direction to find out more information. I would be very grateful for any help, Mark Etheridge. Researching the names ETHERIDGE / STORES / REMMER / GAMSBY / HOGARTH / ADAMSON in the Sunderland area.
Thanks for that Alistair,I'll get onto that. regards,Ron. Derby.
Hello, Im hoping I can get some advice. Is there a book or disc on the market relating to Shotton, Co Durham? Im interested in some distant ancestors who moved from Nottinghamshire to Shotton (Wilson) and was hoping I could learn of some memorial inscriptions. regards, Ron. Derby.
Ron There is "Memories of Shotton Colliery" by Shotton Colliery History Group and published by County Durham Books. I purchased my copy at one of the local libraries in the Easington area. Tony, Where were Elizabeth's younger siblings born? It sounds to me that death in infancy is a possibility - FreeBMD has several possible candidates, if minor variations in name are considered. Hi Tony fascinating story I'm not able to assist directly but my mothers family was McGann and I have them on Tyneside in 1870 before moving to Teesside later in the century. I believe they were in the Bishop Auckland in 1861 but under the name of Maghann. The important point is the alternative names and their spelling but I could see you name sounding the same with an irish accent. If you want to look at the earlier McGanns then I'm happy to talk to you off list to see if there is any symmetry cheers doug kyle --On 23 November 2010 09:23 +1100 TonyM <Horler@one-name.org> wrote: > Hello, > > Can any one please assist me? > > I'm trying to find my aunt Elizabeth MEIGHAN, born at 36 St Cuthbert's > Street, Gateshead on 10th May 1912. Linda and Dawn Thanks for your input. I may have solved one problem. I have put all the marriages onto separate Family Group Charts and then looked at 1841 Census entries. I think I might have made a small breakthrough. My Whitfield HARRISON I think is living with his mother and siblings in 1841 Census. I think this Whitfield married Ann Hill. So he would have been a bachelor. Now just to confirm which Whitfield Harrison married Hannah HODGSON. I will get this lot correct yet. Thanks for allowing me to ramble on here. Hi all I was after someone else's opinion if I am on the right track here. Sorry for the length of the post. I have John HARRISON and Elizabeth WHITFIELD who are my gr=gr=grandparents who married in 1813 in Stanhope Durham. Their 1^st child was Whitfield HARRISON christened 16 Jan 1814 at St. Johns Chapel. Now in the 1841 Census I have this entry. 1841 Census, HO 107, Piece 308, District 2, Fol 26, Page 22 Park (Quarter) Parish of Stanhope, White Hall, Whitfield HARRISON, 20, Lead Miner, Yes (b Durham) Hannah HARRISON, 20,Yes Mary HARRISON, 1, Yes I found a marriage for Whitfield HARRISON to Hannah HODGSON 3 Nov 1838 in St. Johns Chapel, Stanhope. Whitfield is living at High Kitty Crag, Father is listed as Whitfield though.Hannah's father is William HODGSON. Witnesses were William HODGSON and Hannah WHITFIELD. Whitfield states he is a bachelor. I subsequently found a death for Hannah HARRISON June Qtr Sunderland Registration District. Now on 11 Dec 1841 I have Whitfield HARRISON of Middle Black Dean, bachelor son of John HARRISON marrying Ann HILL, Spinster, of Capplespeth daughter of Thomas Race HILL. I then found this baptism. Location: St. John's Chapel, Weardale 20 Feb 1842 Whitfield HARRISON, of White Hall, son of Whitfield HARRISON (miner) by his wife Hannah Then in 1851 I have found 2 Whitfield Harrison's both in Stanhope. 1. Hill House, with Whitfield aged 33, Martha, wife aged 24, Mary, dau. 11, Whitfield, 9,George 6mths. 2. Grain.Whitfield HARRISON, aged 37, Ann wife 29, Thomas, 7, Elizabeth 6, John 4, Margaret 11 mths. Now even though in number 1, the wife is listed as Martha, the rest fits. In 1861 Census I have Whitfield Harrison, born about 1814 with wife Ann, and children, including Thomas 17, Elizabeth 16, John, 14, Margaret. Do I have 2 Whitfield Harrison's marrying here, or 1, and there is an error on the 1851 Census for the wife's name. Secondly, why, if it is the same Whitfield HARRISON marrying both Hannah HODGSON and Ann HILL why would he state he was a bachelor. Any thoughts please, I am total confused. I have now found thanks to the wonderful new Family Search Lab site, that Whitfield HARRISON and his wife Ann nee Ann Race HILL ended up in Missouri USA. Before chasing this family am I on the right track. Thanks for reading this long saga. A confused Joy Light .
Linda Thanks a million for that. In the 1851 Census he has a different wife, if I have the correct person. Though I have found a Hannah dying in 1841 that could be her. Regards Joy
