    1. [DUR-NBL] FENWICK cousin to TAYLOR, moved to W Virginia
    2. Steve
    3. On August 16 1903, my grandfather Thomas TAYLOR and his younger brother Samuel arrived from Seghill, Northumberland, England, in New York on their way to join their cousin John FENWICK in Thurmond, Fayette, West Virginia. As far as I am aware Thomas and Samuel only had brothers so the link of cousin must come from their wives, mother, or be slightly more distant. Thomas was married to Emma HUME, Samuel to Priscilla HAYES. Their mother was Ann Maria LEE/LEES and one of her sisters married into a CAUFIELD/CORFIELD family. From the last time I tried to track down this link, I know that in the USA 1910 census for Mt Hope Town, Fayette County, W Virginia, there was a John FENWICK with wife Jane B, son Gladstone and daughter Margaret. I can find births for a Gladstone and Margaret in 1886 & 1887 but according to the 1910 census the emigrated to the USA in 1888 and so were not on the 1891 as a family and there are just too many marriages between a John Fenwick and a Jane for me to guess at which may be the one I need. So, if anybody has a Fenwick family who emigrated to the West Virginia with 2 small children in 1888 and knows of a connection to one of the names above, or even can just tell me the maiden name of Jane, I would be delighted to hear from them. Cheers Steve

    2. Janis Noonan
    3. Steve, You might just have to resort to getting Gladstone Fenwick's birth certificate to find the correct mother's name to help figure out the relationship. By WW1 draft time Gladstone was living in Bower Hill, Norfolk, Virginia. Born 1 Aug 1886 Northumberland, naturalized citizen and supporting his farther (sic) and mother, looks like he was a Farm worker, single. By WW2 draft time (1942) he was still in Norfolk Co. Virginia, employed at home and the person who would always know his address was Miss Margaret Fenwick, Bowers Hill, Norfolk Co., Virginia, no mention of a wife. Gladstone died in Mar 1972 and last SS payment address went to Portsmouth City, Portsmouth, Virginia. So he may started out in West Virginia but lived most of his adult life in Virginia. The 1910 census also reveals that John and Jane Fenwick were married 35 years by that time, 7 children, 6 alive. You can see more of the children and that the occupation turned to farming by the 1930 census. From the 1930 census there is a son Charles Bruno age 50 and a son James William who is 53 as well as a Thomas age 46, Gladstone and Margaret are there also. All these sons have WW1 draft registration cards with their birthdates on them--living in Bower Hill, Norfolk, Virginia In the 1881 census for England: RG11/5090 folio 83 page 21 Beehive Inn, Seghill, NBL John H Fenwick, Head, Mar, 30, Innkeeper, Northumberland Newcastle Jane L. Fenwick, Wife, Mar 26, Innkeeper wife, Northumberland Newcastle James William Fenwick, Son, 3, Scholar, Northumberland Seghill Charles B. Fenwick, Son, 1, Northumberland Seghill Jane Fenwick Daur, 2mo, Northumberland Seghill, Jane Gray, Mother, Widow, 62, Durham Chester Le Street Mary J. Maldison, Serv, Unm, 17, Domestic servant, Northumberland Bedlington I don't know if any of this information coupled with what you know helps but may someday help you figure out the relationship. I am no relation. If you are looking for info in the US the name may be occasionally spelled Fennick. Janis

He married my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Hannah Howard (b. 1845), in 1862 in Halvergate. They had, perhaps, as many as ten children and lived in Great Yarmouth from about 1868 to about 1890 when they and a few of the children moved north to the Newcastle area. It appears that Samuel died around 1895, but I don't know where. The family was living in Byker in the 1891 census. (My grandmother was remarried in 1898 to William Cook from Bedlington). I found a Samuel Brown who died in Tynemouth on 15 Jun 1895 but the informant on the d.c. is listed as his son, William J. Brown. I do not believe he had a son by that name, so I am stuck. Can someone tell me if there were obituaries published at that time that I could consult? Many thanks for the help. Tod Brown Warren, Maine, USA

    3. Dear Wendel, LDS has filmed many of these wills and I have in the past obtained copies from the films. You say you are in Texas - probably an LDS centre near to you. Have a look at the LDS site https://www.familysearch.org/ go to "library catalogue" and in the search box select "titles" and then key in "wills and administrations, 1526-1858" this brings up a link to the wills for the Diocese of Durham. Click on it and it will expand to show you the relevant film numbers (there are 182 reels). I would think that John Melrose's will should be on either film 90970 (copy wills and admons 1838-1840) or 90971 (copy wills and admons 1840-1842) . Offhand I don't remember whether they are filed alphabetically or by date of probate. James Melrose may be on the same film or perhaps 90972 Hope this helps a bit. 3. Hello Wendell, I believe the records you are quoting are from the North East Inheritance project. Durham University Library hold the original records and the project is to make them freely available online. The searchable database is now online and the images of the actual documents are expected soon, in collaboration with the LDS. Here is the link to Durham's site http://familyrecords.dur.ac.uk/nei/ Contact details can be found on there. 2. Ruth Appleby
    3. Hi Bill Do you have him in the 1841 census? I was wondering what his family situation was - were they in trade or skilled workers (i.e. a little better off than most)? At that time, the Workhouse was one of the very few places where people could get medical attention - particularly if they were in reduced circumstances, it was delivered free of charge. Do you know what he died of? If it was an accident, he may have been taken there by strangers as no-one knew him. If it was a progressive illness, he may have been taken there for treatment on more than one occasion before he died. There are so many possibilities. Ruth PS If it was an accident there may be something about it in the local newspaper. > From: w.waddle@btinternet.com > > Subject: [DUR-NBL] question about death notice 1846 > > My GGGF Robert Waddle died in December 1846 in the Tynemouth Union workhouse > at the age of 28. 3. Dear all, Following a wonderful lead, I now know that my 3 x great aunt, Ann PRIOR, married William TURPIE on 18 March 1861 in Arbroath, Forfar. Ann PRIOR was born in South Shields on 7 January 1835, daughter of James PRIOR and Ann (nee Archer). William TURPIE was the son of Alexander TURPIE and Elizabeth (nee GRAY). I don't know why Ann PRIOR went to Arbroath. She shows as a dressmaker, spinster on the marriage record. William TURPIE was a seaman, bachelor who shows as born in Arbroath on the 1871 census (South Shields, RG10 5033, page 40, schedule 209, 184 East Adelaide Street), so perhaps they went back to his family to marry. They had children born in South Shields: Ann Elizabeth TURPIE, born and died in 1862 Francis Walters B. TURPIE, born 1864 James Prior TURPIE, born 1865 William Gibson TURPIE, born 1868 Alexander TURPIE, born 1870 John TURPIE, born 1873 Charles Smith TURPIE, born 1876 I would be delighted to hear from anyone who may have these people in their tree.
