    3. Hi Brenda With great respect there is nothing anyone on the list can do, the best place to send an enquiry is the GRO themselves For contact details see http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/contact_us.asp There are email, telephone and snail mail ways of getting in contact Although it is frustrating when certificates do not arrive in five minutes <g> perhaps its worth taking into account that its just three weeks after Christmas when they would have had staff on holiday or closed completely (some places close days before Christmas and open in January) yet the orders invariably do not have holidays but get more as new people take up the hobby (obsession :-) I would make contact directly by the best method for you but do read the instructions on site If you have been waiting for twelve years a couple more weeks won't hurt to much <g> (and yes I am joking I know all to well the feeling of waiting) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi there listers > I have sent the right amount of $$$ and the information to the GR > office last month for > a marriage certificate in Knaresborough in 1848 for JOHN JONES and > CATHERINE CLARK. > Writing from Cape Cod Mass, I have been doing Durham family genealogy for > 12 years and the info has come slowly at best. > This couple's children and grandchildren lived in Consett and worked > in the mines. > They had come from Co Monaghan (at least the in laws) and > eventually(1879) came over > to the US east coast. > How long does it take for the GRO to send a cert ???? 1. [DUR-NBL] James and Mary FOSTER, Hindley Hall, Broomley
    2. YvonnePurdy
    3. Hi all, I'm trying to help someone locate the graves of James and Mary FOSTER who lived at Hindley Hall, Broomley, Northumberland. James FOSTER died on 30 March 1879, at Hindley, aged 60, and his death was reported in The Standard (London, England). He left a substantial will, and had been a Lead-Manufacturer. There are many references to him and some of his family on Durham Record Office site; Tyne & Wear Archives, National Archives etc, but no mention of his burial place. I believe that St. Peter, Bywell would be the parish church for Broomley, and I visited the churchyard yesterday. Unfortunately, I could not find a gravestone for them, but several stones were illegible, and some are laid flat. The church seems to be closed at the present time, no doubt due to the bad weather conditions over the winter, so I could not check if there was a memorial plaque inside the church. (Completely unrelated, despite the bitter cold, the snowdrops were trying their best to grow and flower!). >From a report in the Newcastle Courant, (23 February 1877), their daughter, Emma Foster, was married on 15 February 1877 in Cannes, France, British Vice Consulate to Charles Frank Forster, she the daughter of James Foster, Hindley Hall, Stocksfield on Tyne. There was quite a large headstone in the churchyard: Charles James Forster, son of C. F. Forster, born June 4th 1880, died at Hindley July 28th 1881. Grandmother Mary Foster was still living at Hindley Hall, Broomley in the 1881 census, which leads me to believe that her husband James Foster would also be buried there, and possibly herself, whenever she shuffled off the mortal coil. Does anyone please have access to the burial records for St. Peter, Bywell who could possibly help to confirm whether the senior Fosters were buried there? Kind regards, Yvonne Purdy

    3. Brenda, a month seems much too long. There is nothing I can see on the web site to indicate problems/delays in issuing certificates. I suggest you contact the GRO directly to find out what is going on. 3. I ordered a certificate that was supposed to have been dispatched 21 Dec. Go to the GRO website and click on "order a certificate" when that page opens click on "contact us". There is a section for after you have ordered about making complaints. You will need that COL number from when you ordered. I always print out the page after I have purchased that gives the information you supplied from the index as this is not the first time my certificate did not arrive in a timely manner. Actually I made my complaint 2 weeks ago and I am still waiting. Janis

    3. Hi there listers I have sent the right amount of $$$ and the information to the GR office last month for a marriage certificate in Knaresborough in 1848 for JOHN JONES and CATHERINE CLARK. Writing from Cape Cod Mass, I have been doing Durham family genealogy for 12 years and the info has come slowly at best. This couple's children and grandchildren lived in Consett and worked in the mines. They had come from Co Monaghan (at least the in laws) and eventually(1879) came over to the US east coast. How long does it take for the GRO to send a cert ???? I found the info on findmypast and feel it is correct. It has been over a month and I wonder what you people have experienced with the office. Any info will be much appreciated as I got a confirmation etc. Thanks to all. Brenda

    3. Hello Diana, I'm afraid that I can't help with your query as I have not got that far back, but I wonder if your Thomas BARKESS is connected to my 3 x great grandfather Thomas BARKESS (aka Barkes, Barkass) who according to all censuses was born in Durham c.1811. I have not been able to find a baptism either. He married Elizabeth SMITH in Houghton le Spring on 4 July 1838 where his father was named John BARKESS, Waggonman. Thomas & Elizabeth BARKESS brought up their 10 children in Seaham Harbour where Thomas died in 1884, aged 73 years. I would be interested to hear if you know of a connection. 3. I looked at those baptisms in Lanchester are these the ones? Thomas Barkes baptised 12 Jun 1775 s/o Thomas and Isabella Mary Barkes baptised 29 Nov 1778 d/o Thomas and Isabella, Wareland Green Burial: James Barkas, son of Thomas Barkas, Wareland Green 3 Apr 1780 Isabel Barkas baptised 25 May 1783 d/o Thomas and Isabella, Wareland Green Ann Barkas baptised 18 Dec 1785 d/o Thomas and Isabella, Wareland Green Thomas Barkes born Aug 1788 baptised 29 Nov 1790 s/o Thomas, Holmside ( mother's name on this one and his brother and the next baptism date not present but others around it are.) James Barkes baptised 29 Nov 1790 s/o Thomas, Holmside When you say Sunderland do you mean Sunderland or Bishopwearmouth? I could not find a burial of a Thomas Barkas in my Sunderland burial index I did find one in Bishopwearmouth St. Michael - Thomas Barkas, age 59, died 27 Apr 1801, buried 29 Apr 1801, Hilton Ferry, Cartwright Isabella Barkas burial Bishopwearmouth, Front Street, age 90, 9 Mar 1835. This is only from an index so I don't know if it says widow of Thomas or not--or anything aside from the name. Janis

He was a miner and they lived in Brancepeth. Page 54 and 55 just answered that question for me. He probably got evicted due to the "the rocking strike" at Brancepeth. Stephanie
