    1. [DUR-NBL] Thomas JORDAN Lanchester Durham
    2. Gwenda Evans
    3. I am new to this list and I am researching the family below. I have found a Thomas JORDAN, Head, Wid, 59, Coal Miner b Ireland Co Mayo. Info from the 1891 census at Durham. With children John 20 b Wm 18 b Lancashire Margaret Ann 16 b Durham. Mary 14 b Durham. Alice 13 b Lancashire Thomas 11 b Durham. Agnes 9 b Durham Joseph 5 b Durham Catherine 2 b Durham. Although it says Lancashire on the 1891 census, most of the children were registered in the Lanchester area of Durham. I could not find them on the 1881. Thomas who is the main person I am researching. I have no idea of whom his mother was. Father Thomas died when Thomas was 12 so would be possibly 1892 or 1893. In 1901 Catherine aged 2 from 1891 is in St Mary's home. Margaret A and her Sister Mary E are in South moor Durham Where Margaret is a House keeper. Thomas is boarding with the family of Elizabeth Hughes. Joseph is possibly the adopted son of William and Thomasine Hutton. The only Agnes I can find is the dtr of Bridget Jordan 56 and her husband Martin Jordan 60, could be a relation. Could someone please check and see if they can find the eldest child John on the 1871 census or Thomas born abt 1832 Please !!! With a wife if Possible !!! Thank you Gwenda Evans

    1. [DUR-NBL] NSW Death Certs
    2. Merrilyn Minter
    3. Dawn is not correct when she says that NSW death certifcates do not name children and provide ages - again it depends on the informant, and possibly the registrar asking the questions. I have 25 NSW certifcates which provide names of children, mostly with ages, even though some of these are wrong. I also one which breaks these into children of different marriages. I do have 4 which just say number of males and females deceased. There are also the frustrating certificates where the informant is someone from the hospital where the person died, and they say there is no wife or children - or they are unknown, simply because the information isn't in their records. Other adult certificates have the information that they weren't married, or were married with no issue. 3. Many thanks to Stan, Sue and Adam for their very prompt help with my query re the photo of Sarah Thirlwell taken by Thirlwell Ltd of Bridge Street of Stockton on Tees, as well as Darlington and Hartlepool. All these places are some distance from Southwick, Sunderland where Sarah lived and I wonder whether she would travel to have her portrait taken. Is it possible to find the christian name of the Thirlwell who owned this business in the 1850s? Would a shop be recorded in the 1851 census if no one lived on the premises? What a wonderful website Stockton on Tees has. Helen Christchurch New Zealand

    3. Victoria in Australia gives all that too, plus names and ages of children or if deceased, marriage spouse details and of them all if more than one marriage - separates the children into the different marriages too. Informant, relationship to deceased etc as well. Always assuming the informant knew the information of course. These days the informant can in fact be the deceased, too, though they don't put that on the death cert. I as named as the informant on my mother's death cert BUT she had given all the information when she prepaid her funeral. I had to amend one thing. She said she was born in Gillingham Kent England (correct) and spent "whole of life" here in Victoria. I amended that bit - she came here when she was four - so the answer was 81 years not 85. I only picked it up when I got the death cert in the mail - mind you it was very easy to amend, done in a five minute visit to the BDM office and they posted out the amended version to me. NSW here has ALMOST as much info on them but children are given just as eg 5 females living 2 males living 1f deceased 2m deceased. Also low long she had been in Paisley, also mam and dads names- inc mams maiden name, and cause of death. All for 6 credits on scotspeople (30 credits costs £6.00) So I now know where the family came from in IRELAND as opposed to just Ireland and the approx year of leaving Ireland- all from a siblings death record:) Wish a few more had gone to Scotland in the 1850's. 3. Thirlwells was located 21 Bridge street , which i believe Bridge street is now Thornaby. There is Victoria Bridge in stockton over the river Tees, one side of the bridge is Stockton on tees which is Durham , the other side of the bridge is Thornaby on tees which was Yorkshire then. Its not a huge bridge. Boundaries change . There is a Bridge road stockton not sure about a bridge street maybe long gone . If you go onto this website below and type in a few searches you may find something. sue http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/default.aspx

    1. [DUR-NBL] Thirwells
    2. Hi guys I was astonished to find that a lot of my old family photos were from Thirwells. Interestingly Thirwells Ltd. - a limited company ! They are described as being at Stockton -on Tees and also West Hartlepool and Darlington. My mothers family was from Stockton and as a small boy I spent a lot of time there but I do not remember the location of Thirwells corner. Can anybody tell me where it was ? I'd always assumed that the family portraits were by Forrest Wompra of Middlesbrough Redcar and Saltburn. Has the list of photographs of either of them survived ? doug Kyle

    2. JimBev
    3. I am looking for my grand aunt Martha LOWE (nee COPELAND) who was always known by family members as Aunt Pat. She was born 25 Jun 1877 at 40 Peebles Street in Newton-on-Ayr, AYR, SCT, d/o Joseph Copeland and Elizabeth McClymont. In 1897 she married James Carrington LOWE at Bugsworth(?,) DBY, ENG. He had been born in 1878 in Bugsworth, DBY, ENG s/o Isaac Lowe and Jane Carrington. Their three children Leonard, Harry and Joseph were all born in the Bugsworth area. According to family, there was also a girl Lizzie/Elizabeth about the same age who was known as Lizzie LOWE. Lizzie would have been a niece of Martha who came to stay after her parent(s) died The family probably shifted to the Newcastle upon Tyne area as I am fairly certain that I have found both James's death entry September Qtr 1963 and Martha's death entry in June Qtr 1961 in Newcastle upon Tyne. (Martha's place of death confirms what I have been told by older family members) Jim Jim & Beverley Payne NEW ZEALAND jr_bjpayne@xtra.co.nz Our web site is located at the following URL: http://www.shampayne.org.nz

Unusual to be able to adjust one of Stan's valuable contributions ... Generally correct except for certain years (1855 1860) in Scotland when the undertaker and place of burial may be recorded. See http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=554&628 There are substantial differences in Scottish BMD records which unfortunately start later 1855 but are richer in family information.. Find England (where all my ancestors are .. So far) frustrating compared to Scotland where my wife's lot come from. Robin -- Robin and Margaret McEwen-King Lanark Scotland

In 1851 a new era in photography was introduced by Frederick Scott Archer, who introduced the Collodion process. This process was much faster than conventional methods, reducing exposure times to two or three seconds, thus opening up new horizons in photography. Prices for daguerreotypes varied, but in general would cost about a guinea (£1.05), which would be the weekly wage for many workers. The collodion process, however, was much cheaper; prints could be made for as little as one shilling (5p). However there are no photographers called Thirlwell in the 1858 Durham & Northumberland Trades Directory Regards Stan Mapstone http://www.mapstone.org http://www.one-name.org/profiles/mapstone.html
