Some time ago I wrote to the Newcastle upon Tyne registrar office and asked if a child had been a twin and one child was stillborn would the time of the live birth be recorded on the birth certificate. I was told no, a stillbirth wasn't considered a person and didn't count in law so the live birth was recorded as a single birth. She did point out some registrars misunderstood the rules and recorded the time for single births. If anyone on the list has a certificate for around the 1849/50 mark from the Tynemouth register office maybe they could check to see if the time of birth is recorded on it too. Margaret. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------- There are none with the same reference "Robson Robert Swan Tynemouth 25 446" so there was no other birth registered, and >99% of births have been done for that ¼. It could be that there were twins, and the time was noted for the first one, but the second one was a still birth. Sill births did not have to be registered until 1926. Regards Stan Mapstone

I've just found a cutting in a WW1 soldier's prayer book. I don't know which newspaper its from but here it is. "Robbery at Stella Hall" newspaper cutting found in William SPARK’s prayer book circa 1914-1918 A Soldier charged This afternoon at the Gateshead County Police Court (before Mr Wm. Latimer and Mr J A Curry, a private in the York and Lancashire Regiment, named George Goacher was charged with having broken and entered Stella Hall, near Blaydon and stolen property valued at £20 belonging to Mr Joseph Cowen. Mr F E Foster in opening the case for the prosecution commended the vigilance of the police, and pointed to a matchbox and a candle amongst the articles produced as proof of the prisoners intention” Gen List Lass _________________________________________________________________ Be one of the first to try Windows Live Mail. http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=5d21c51a-b161-4314-9b0e-4911fb2b2e6d
The registrar would not be present at the birth, so was it the custom for the midwife or doctor to note down the time, if so they would still do this even if the second child was still born. When the birth was registered what was the procedure? Perhaps a particular registrar asked what the time of birth was and wrote it down especially in the early years of the registration system. I don't know if this has been posted before but where the father's name, for example is "John Smith, Junr" it has been transcribed as "John Smith June". The transcriber had interpreted the ditto marks for the surname to relate to "June" so all the rest of the family are listed as "Margaret June", "Ellen June", etc. In just the 1891 census there are 967 listed, and a random sampling confirms that Junr. has been transcribed as the surname June. There are others in other censuses. May be why some people cannot be found! Regards Stan Mapstone

If so, is there an efficient way to find the other siblings? ________________________________________________________________________ In Scotland the time of birth was put on all birth certificates. In England and Wales it usually means a multiple birth, except for the early years of registration when some registrars entered the time for single births. If it's a multiple birth, you should find another birth for the same surname with exactly the same GRO reference - assuming of course that the births were recorded on the same page of the register. Hello John: I think that in the early days some registrars did record times of birth even for singleton births. So you can't be sure either way. But assuming that it was a twin birth would mean that both would be registered in the same district and same quarter. There are only 8 ROBSON births in Tynemouth for the March quarter of 1850 (see FreeBMD) of which one is your Robert Swan. It could be worth a letter to the local registrar for Tynemouth explaining the situation and requesting the birth cert for a second child. You'd have to list the other 7 and you'd have to send a cheque for at least one certificate. Specify that the parents must match those for Robert Swan and see what happens. The local registrars will usually return a cheque if they can't find a match. Regards, Irene Marlborough FreeCEN Coordinator for Manchester 1861 http://www.freecen.org.uk

I am sending a link to the aforementioned website, which provides a history of the 1923 lockout of the Whitehaven miners. The miners choir traveled all over, and one member kept a great diary. Quite a few County Durham residents are mentioned as helping the men in the excerpts near the bottom of the linked page: http://www.wmvc.co.uk/tour.html Amanda www.pitmen.co.uk

Hello Mark, The name is familiar. I have Robert JAMES b.c 1690 at Long Framlington with wife Philis Martin. This pair had Isabel JAMES b.c 1725 at Long Horsley who married William BURN b.c 1714 at Long Framlington in 1749. Possibly same family. Said Isabel JAMES died I believe, although I am still looking for her burial because I feel sure the marriage of Isabel WILSON in 1752 to William BURN was the same William BURN. They appeared to move round district a fair bit but I hadn't thought of looking at Alnwick for JAMES family. The BURN - WILSON alliance is my direct line. Hope you find your JAMES clan. They sound interesting and you have done well to find them. Best of luck. Judy McCracken
