Dear list many thanks to Joyce David and Gloria for the 1841 information that is a real help. Especially I must thank Gloria for also providing the 1861 census for the parents - I had not found that either. I must admit I find it quite confusing sometimes to marry up the families in the different census as quite often the clues - D o B, age, where born and family members seem to almost be different for each census. As the two eldest girls are missing I guess I must assume they are working and living elsewhere in 1841 but had returned home in 1851 still unmarried. Not unreasonable now that it has been pointed out. It is so great to have such a large amount of knowledge residing in this list and also the great willingness to be willing to take time to share it. Hello Listers, Does anyone have any information on a William Wilson who was born circa 1757 in Ilderton, Northumberland. There is a baptism in the IGI for 27th August, 1760, but it does not name a father. Thank you. David Wilson.

Hi list, On the 1851 census my great-grandfather is found in Leadgate, Durham, England. It says he was born in Ratcliff, Northumberland in 1835 along with a brother born there in 1832 and a sister in 1838. An older sister and brother were born in Newburn, Northumberland in 1829 and 1830 and his mother in Bells Close, Northumberland in 1801. My problem is I can't find Ratcliff, Northumberland on the map. Is it an old city that has become extinct or has it been renamed? Stephanie

I would like to beg some help from someone who has access to Ancestry. I have but just cannot find the family I want in 1841. I have found them in 1851 as follows HO107 Piece 2409 Folio 46 page 2 John PEEL Hd Mar 57 coalminer North Ovingham NTHB (I think) Ellen PEEL wife mar 42 Jarrow DUR Jane PEEL dau U 31 N Gosforth NTHB Elizabeth PEEL dau U 29 All Saints Newcastle NTHB John PEEL son U 19 miner Mylam ?? NTHB (not at all sure of this) William PEEL son U 6 scholar North Ovingham NTHB (again query) I have been at this for almost a week solid now and for the life of me I cannot seem to find this family in 1841. Because of the large gap between William and John I did wonder if Ellen was a second marriage and so was not with John senior in 1841. Hi Paul Try http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com Pay per view but has what you need You are very unlikely to find birth place though, it was not entered until 1969. Have you not found her in 1871? that would give her birth place. If such mis-transcriptions are found on the Ancestry site then it is a good case for adding a correction to any entry found where the name has been wrongly transcribed. If you find a family on the censuses at Ancestry with a wrongly transcribed name then go to the link on the left of the results list, "View Record" this brings up a pane showing brief details of the household and over on the right of the page is a short column of links. One of these is for adding a comment or correction. Go there and make the correction. Eventually the correction you add will appear in the index with a little symbol beside the name to draw your attention to the correction. If we all do this every time we find a wrongly copied name on the indexes at Ancestry it will help others searching for the same family. I believe that you can also add corrections to the indexes on the findmypast site, formerly 1837online. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. The child's name is actually down as Margt Jane Ainsworth on the image, ie Margaret has been abbreviated. The transcription below has made this into Mary. Durhamrecords has expanded the name to Margaret.
