I wonder if ANYONE would be so kind as to help me. I am "fairly" new to searching for my family tree. I have got to the stage where I have gone back in the censuses as far as I think I can, and I now need to look at Parish / Church Records. I have subscribed to Ancestry.co.uk and genesreunited, but I'm not at all sure if I am using Ancestry properly. I have tried to look at parish records and don't seem to be getting anywhere. I wonder if ANYONE would be kind enough to give me an "idiots" guide as to how to find people on the parish records. I have gone into this section, but don't seem to have much luck with anything. For instance, if a name comes up, how do you know if this is the correct person? If anyone could give me a bit of advice, or any tips, websites, etc. that they use in their searches, I would be grateful. My ancestors come mostly from South Shields, County Durham. I am at a bit of a loss as to how to look up the parish records. Regards Karen Hertfordshire, UK

Hello Bette, Several reasons. The oldest used to be incomplete transcriptions of records, but FreeBMD are well on the way to having a complete set of the earlier records online. So a very well earned note of thanks to all transcribers is in order I would think. Then there are those that aren't easy to read and could be mistranscribed and appear with wrong page details. Then there are those that can't be read and don't appear at all on the page you want. Then there are those that are indexed wrongly at source by the GRO, for instance I have a Christiania that is recorded as Christopher in the index pages. If you send me details of your particular problem offline, I'll see if I can help. In this case, it's the extra female named that makes the odd number. There must be a simple explanation for this but I have yet to figure it out. Thank you, Bette

Dear Listers, The next time someone is in the Durham Record Office could they possibly look for a baptism of a Jonathan Wilson in the parish of Stanhope. I believe he was baptised in 1822. His parents were John and Mary. If you find it could you email me the details. I would go myself but I live in Dorset and a trip up to Durham is out of the question at the moment. Thank you for your time David Wilson.
Hi Sandy Pleased to hear that you are going to make your trip over here. I live about seven miles from Ryhope and Tunstall and would suggest that you find a B&B in Sunderland as your base while you are in the area. There are umpteen buses out to Ryhope and Tunstall, in fact they run every few minutes from the bus interchange, and the daily bus tickets are reasonably priced. So you shouldn't need to hire a car while in this area. As far as B&bs are concerned I have a couple of links that should help you to decide. http://www.southshields-sanddancers.co.uk/places_to_stay/sunderland_accommodation.htm http://www.touristnetuk.com/Ne/northumberland/accommodation/ac-serviced/sunderland.htm Hope this is useful for you. My grand parents Joseph Temperley And Margaret Ann nee Smith married 1906 had two children in England, one female who died in England, my father Thomas born 1909 Co Durham. They lived near Brandon and Joseph was a coal miner. Help is required to find the females name, birth date and date of death to complete this family tree. I am spoilt in NSW most births give the parents names. This is not the case in England ! Thanking you in advance Ralph
Hello Sandy: If you've never driven in the UK before, I certainly would recommend the train pass. I've used a train pass the last 2 summers and found it very convenient. It's much more convenient than if you lived in the UK and had to buy tickets. There are no restrictions on when and where you travel (except by country so if you plan on being in Scotland or Wales, you'll need to buy a different pass). There are also a lot of suburban trains that could suit you too. There is a branch that runs between Thornaby and Newcastle which has stops in Sunderland (for Tunstall) and Seaham Harbour (for Ryhope). I believe that trains are every hour or maybe every other hour outside of rush periods. It's very easy to check schedules on the internet. You have to consider how to get around between trains. I think bus and/or taxi in Co. Durham is practical and relatively cheap. And even inter-city buses are inexpensive. Last year I travelled from Sunderland to Manchester on a bus at a cost of 9 GBP (about $17). For country areas you'll need to rent a car but you might do that on an ad-hoc basis for day trips and the like. I can't help with specific B&Bs in this area because I always stay with relatives but the plan is a good one. This is what I do rather than a hotel. It certainly has its charms - I've stayed in some very interesting places including a 17th century farmhouse in Yorkshire. It's usually quite easy to find places and book when you arrive although you have to be careful if there's a local event which might fill up local accomodations. You might consider pubs too. Some pubs run a small hotel business on the side, so to speak, and I've had good experiences so far. Remember that a lot of the County Durham area you are interested in is post-industrial and only now starting to regain it's natural beauty. There have been attempts at restoration which are beginning to have an effect. There's a hiking trail along the cliffs from Sunderland to Blackhall (I think) and the views are spectacular. The whole trail is about 11 miles, I believe, but you could certainly do the section which includes Ryhope and Seaham. There are magnesium limestone cliffs down this coast line and it's quite impressive. I hope this helps, Irene Marlborough In Texas where it's currently sleeting and freezing!!!
John, thanks for your reply, I'm hoping apprenticeship papers will be available, but apparently no admission records are available for the Gateshead Union, so even with apprentice papers no parents will be known, but like you say, keep trying. Thanks Fred
George, In the majority of cases I have found that only the record of the baptism date is shown. However this very much depends upon the parish and minister who was doing the recording. If you are lucky then you will find two columns in the records showing both the date of birth and the baptism . In most cases when both are shown the dates are usually between 2-30 days apart but there appears to be no fixed rule this.
