Hello List: How do I confirm that I have found the correct parents?: Ancestor, John George Joyce chr. 1830 Houghton Le Spring. On 1841 and 1851 censuses, Bishopwearmouth with mother Jane Joyce and siblings. I have a copy of his marriage certificate from GRO 1854 which lists his father as Robert Joyce, (nothing indicating alive or deceased) occupation, Trimmer. 1851 census, Jane Joyce is listed as widow. I found a marriage (IGI) for Robert Joyce and Jane Dent 7 Dec 1824 All Saints, New Castle on Tyne. Date would be correct as the children were ch ristened, Jane, 1826, William 1827, John George 1830 and others until 1834. Any suggestions much appreciated. Regards, Jackie Southern California
>Ralph Williamson died in 1888 at 26 George Street East Tunstall and >his wife Margaret (Barrass) Williamson died in 1893 at the same address. >Where would they have been buried and what church would have >conducted the services. Would this cemetery still have the headstones? They were both buried in St Matthews Churchyard in Silksworth, their burial services were conducted there. At the time of their deaths they were living in New Silksworth. Ralph was buried on the 18th September 1888, and Margaret on the 16th May 1893. There is a booklet in the Local Studies Department of Sunderland Central Library containing the monumental inscriptions for the headstones in the churchyard, but neither name is mentioned in it. >What is the name of the church and cemetery on Burdon Lane in Ryhope >that goes out to the southwest. The cemetery is on the south or east >side of the road. The parish church in Ryhope is St Paul's, in the centre. I suspect the church you refer to is the chapel in the grounds of Ryhope Cemetery. This cemetery wasn't opened until around 1898. > What is the area or development directly across >the road on the north or west side of the road. That is just part of Ryhope village, a relatively recent development. > Can anyone tell me >what was there in 1861-3. I am looking for Fowler Terrace in 1863. If you look at 'www.old-maps.co.uk' and enter 'Ryhope', you will be able to see that there was very little there then, which was around 1861. What you can see is a trial coal shaft which appears to be where the colliery was. Should you visit the churchyard you will probably only be able to get a feel for where they were buried from the dates on the headstones. Burials date from 1872 so the grave will not be far from the church. Cheers ------ Philip
Hi Jenny, To comment on your suggestion I wish I had the name of the marriage partner; the person whose name is missing from the Freebmd website & the GRO/Ancestry.com database. I do not know the name nor the names of any children that may have been born to the couple. I'm afraid that my information is scant, at best..... but where there's a *will* there usually is a way...... no pun intended! Merrilyn Have you thought about Youth Hostels? You would have to join something like the National Youth Hostel Association, but I'm sure www.yha.com.au could tell you more. www.iyhf.org or www.yha.org.uk may be of help too. I'm not sure of prices but I would think they're cheaper than hotels. happy travels Libby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Merrilyn Minter" <merrilynjminter@hotmail.com> To: <dur-nbl@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 18, 2007 4:55 PM Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] Trip to England > >My husband and I are finally going to plan the trip to England we >>have always wanted to take. Hi No luck from me unless...... These people have to be the hardest to find! Am I looking at the right ones- dad Thomas Perry born earsdon Northumberland and so possibly John George is a cousin or something? 1871 NameAge Thomas Peel48 Frances J Pell9 Isabella Pell47 John Pell14 Richard Pell16 Robert Pellunder 1 month Sarah Pell20 Thomas Pell4 1881 Name Age Emma Peery 19 Jane Peery John Peery 24 John Richards 2 1861 Name Age Benjamin Peel 16 Isabella Peel 37 John D Peel 5 Richard Peel 8 Sarah Peel 10 Thomas Peel 37 SO WHAT IM THINKING IS -AND NO FACTS TO BACK THIS UP--Isabella married twice, in 1851 she is Isabella Harrison with a son Benjamin George Harrison, she then married Thomas perry and Benjamin took perry as a name till he was old enough to choose and so is on census returns as harrison 1871 1881 1891 1901. Is the witness definately John George and not Benjamin George, maybe he signed Perry cos they were brothers- or perry was written as he said he was a brother. 1851 Name Age Benj Geo Harrison 6 Isabella Harrison 26 Margaret Harrison 1 Mary Ann Harrison 4 William Harrison 30 And that is my most fanciful story to date! Shoot me down in flames everyone... or prove me right:) carol

Better, Do you have an idea of who this missing person should be. If you do then search for that persons name in the GRO index as available on Ancestry, www.ancestry.co.uk If you find that persons name there and if it has the same volume and page numbers a the person you have already found on FreeBMDs transcript then it is likely to be the person who married your ancestor. But the only way to be sure is of course to order a copy of the marriage cert. >From what you have written in your reply below, "The other databases, e.g. GRO/BMD @ Ancestry.com, are consistent with the freebmd " it seems to me that you may have gone to the ancestry site and only looked at the FreeBMD transcript there and have not looked at the GRO index itself. The GRO index on the ancestry site is, to all intents and purposes, complete from July 1837-1983 whereas FreeBMD is, as yet, an incomplete transcription of that original GROindex. But maybe you do not know the name of the elusive other half of the marriage that you seek. If that is the case then you need to find the name of the spouse by perhaps finding the birth certificate of at least one of the children from that marriage and seeing what the father's name is. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. <<Thanks to those who took the time to help me sort out the possible reasons for a missing entry (male) in the Freebmd marriage database; especially Margaret, Jenny, John & Colin. The other databases, e.g. GRO/BMD @ Ancestry.com, are consistent with the freebmd so I will continue, from time to time, to check the various Indices for the missing entry. >> Best wishes, Bette

Hello everyone, Can I just say a BIG thankyou to everyone who took the time to send replies to my query about Parish Records. Thanks so much for the info and for the useful website addresses. I have a lot of checking out to do. I do REALLY appreciate all the help you've given, and if there's anyone else out them who may want to help me, that would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks once again. Regards Karen Hertfordshire, UK

http://website.lineone.net/~pjoiner/genuki/DUR/SShieldsStHilda/ Hi Karen, Try this website for an index to marriages in the original Parish Church of South Shields - St Hilda Margaret. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -----Original Message----- From: dur-nbl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:dur-nbl-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of PUTMAN914@aol.com Sent: 19 January 2007 16:11 To: DUR-NBL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DUR-NBL] (no subject) I wonder if ANYONE would be so kind as to help me. I am "fairly" new to searching for my family tree. I have got to the stage where I have gone back in the censuses as far as I think I can, and I now need to look at Parish / Church Records. I have subscribed to Ancestry.co.uk and genesreunited, but I'm not at all sure if I am using Ancestry properly. I have tried to look at parish records and don't seem to be getting anywhere. I wonder if ANYONE would be kind enough to give me an "idiots" guide as to how to find people on the parish records. I have gone into this section, but don't seem to have much luck with anything. For instance, if a name comes up, how do you know if this is the correct person? If anyone could give me a bit of advice, or any tips, websites, etc. that they use in their searches, I would be grateful. My ancestors come mostly from South Shields, County Durham. I am at a bit of a loss as to how to look up the parish records. Regards Karen Hertfordshire, UK
A good move might be to join the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society. http://www.ndfhs.org.uk/ You may then use the postal library to borrow transcriptions of some of the parish records. The Postal Library Catalogue is for the use of members of the NDFHS who live out of the area and are unable to visit the Library and Research Centre at Bolbec Hall. The Catalogue has lists of Parish Register Indexes and Non-conformist Registers in Northumberland and Durham together with Monumental Inscriptions and lists of 'Strays'. Also included are Miscellaneous items and Booklets. All may be borrowed for the cost of the postage. The Catalogue is priced at £1.50 *, post free and requests should be sent to the Postal Librarian at Bolbec Hall. For instance, I have borrowed some of the St Hilda's records - but not found many of 'my' family! Merrilyn Minter @ Newcastle NSW Australia Hello Merrilyn, I remember I have had contact with you in the past as I have been a member of Newcastle Family History Society NSW. (My mother was born in Stockton Newcastle NSW of 2 Scots mining families.) I am wondering if you have ever come across family of Edward BURN arr. Sydney NSW 1832 as Bounty passenger. Children's names were not listed on passenger manifest - 3 girls 2 boys only. He was a pitman from North Shields NBL. He was buried at St Thomas Rest Park, North Sydney in 1853. I am wondering if Edward and Elizabeth BURN went to Newcastle NSW as a mining family. Have you ever seen these names? This is fairly new information for me. Between 1832 and 1853 I have no information about families' whereabouts and don't know where to look for them. Could you email me please? judmc@xtra.co.nz Thanks and greetings to everybody. Judy McCracken in Auckland NZ
Dear Listers, Thanks to those who took the time to help me sort out the possible reasons for a missing entry (male) in the Freebmd marriage database; especially Margaret, Jenny, John & Colin. The other databases, e.g. GRO/BMD @ Ancestry.com, are consistent with the freebmd so I will continue, from time to time, to check the various Indices for the missing entry. Best wishes, Bette
Dear list members I want to give a big thank you to all who replied to my cry for help to help me plan a trip to England. I received lots of advice, tips, insights and offers. I will get in touch with those I need to when the time gets closer. Meanwhile I will scrutinize websites in depth for all the details I need. The tip about the notepad for listing what the pictures are and locations was much appreciated, I never would have thought of that and a small notepad is now in my camera bag. I really appreciate the help of all of you, this list is the greatest. Sandy Bethlehem, Pennsylvania U.S.A.
Dear Listers Ralph Williamson died in 1888 at 26 George Street East Tunstall and his wife Margaret (Barrass) Williamson died in 1893 at the same address. Where would they have been buried and what church would have conducted the services. Would this cemetery still have the headstones? In 1861 census and 1881 census (and I imagine 1870) they were living in Ryhope so I am thinking maybe that is where they were buried. What is the name of the church and cemetery on Burdon Lane in Ryhope that goes out to the southwest. The cemetery is on the south or east side of the road. What is the area or development directly across the road on the north or west side of the road. Can anyone tell me what was there in 1861-3. I am looking for Fowler Terrace in 1863. Thank you for any help you can give. Sandy Bethlehem Pennsylvania U.S.A.
It will be because the page containing the surname of the other person/s, other female, that appear in that same Quarter of the year has not yet been transcribed by FreeBMD, FreeBMD is still an ongoing process. When you find the name of one partner to a marriage on Free BMD but not the other name that you expect to find, scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see the phrase, Found one partner in a marriage and now looking for the spouse, the link is below this phrase and will explain why this is. Alternatively you can search the GRO index free of charge at the Ancestry site, no need to be a subscriber to Ancestry to use this index. www.ancestry.co.uk You will see that there is not only the link to the images of the GRO index but lower down the page a link to the FreeBMD transcript too. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. What can be or should be interpreted when an entry on the "Freebmd" website for a given date (Sept 1862) lists 3 individuals, two females & one male; an odd *man* out scenario. In this case, it's the extra female named that makes the odd number. There must be a simple explanation for this but I have yet to figure it out.
