    1. [DUR-NBL] Newcastle Evening Chronicle death notices look ups offered
    2. Mgt Fuller
    3. Hi Everyone, Thanks to Pat Allon on this list, one of my major brick walls crumbled to dust. As a way of saying thank you to all the people who do the look ups we can't do ourselves I am once again offering to go to the Library to look up Death Notices from the Evening Chronicle - see the index at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices/ hopefully it will be Thursday or Friday of this week but it might be next week before I go. Please put the date first then the name of the person you want the death notice for. 24 March 1899, DANIEL REMFRY age 77 at Heaton. This will make it easier for me to find the details on the emails and get the correct microfilms out of the drawers. Margaret Hall Wallsend. -----Original Message----- From: dur-nbl-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:dur-nbl-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of Janeen McLachlan Sent: 29 January 2007 22:17 To: DUR-NBL-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DUR-NBL] Newcastle Evening Chronicle Is there some kind person on the list who has access to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle for 24 March 1899 who would look up the death notice for DANIEL REMFRY age 77 at Heaton. I found this reference on Genuki but do not have access to this paper and would love to know what the death notice says. Thanks in anticipation. Janeen McLachlan Inverloch Australia

    3. Hello Jenny and the List The list on Genuki is an index to the Death Notices I have copied the full notices for names I am interested in some of which are family members some are not. I have also done look-ups for people who have requested them on a number of mailing lists, which is why some of the names from the Genuki list have appeared in the lists I have posted Regards Grant

    3. Are you unaware that these are all already transcribed on the Genuki site? There is an index of Deaths taken form the Newcastle Evening Chronicle from 2nd. November 1885 - 31st. December 1904. I believe it is an ongoing project by the people who produced the transcriptions. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices/ It would be a shame if you are wasting your time going over something that has already been done. 3. Hello List, My 2X Great Grandfather David Alexander Guthrie born September 1831 in Ouseburn, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England was a Coal Miner and had probably been in a Mining Accident as in the 1871 census David was in Walker Hospital and Died in 1872. David's death was found in the quarter of December 1872. Was his death caused by a Mining accident from 1871 or did he linger until 1872, or had he been in another accident? Has anyone a list of people that were in Mining accidents in the Northumberland area please. Or has someone seen a newspaper artical in the Chronical for a Death or Accident of David A Guthrie please. Thank you in advance for a Information I might receive. Kind Regards Pamela J Groves

    3. Hi Bette, Coalcleugh and Whitely Shield are very little distance apart from each other. I drive past them regularly, on the road up to Nenthead to see my mother. Whitely Shield was an old bastle but not much remains of the bastle, but enough to see it. The house next to it has been restored, but was amazing pre-restoration. It looked at though it was the next step up to a bastle. I have friends who still live in Coalceugh. It's a wee bit bleak up there in the winter, (how the old folk managed in the winters, I don't know), but glorious in the summer. Kind regards, Yvonne >> From: Autobyke@aol.com [mailto:Autobyke@aol.com] Sent: 28 January 2007 09:41 To: bmcintosh@new.rr.com Cc: DUR-NBL@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] Wolfe Cleugh & Whitely Shield > location Hi Bette There is a Coalcleugh in the area you speak of near Allenheads and Alston. 3. Dear Listers (especially Keith, Margaret F., Laurel N., Yvonne P., Shaun et al), Thanks to so many who took the time to help me pinpoint the location of Wolf Cleugh, NBL. I am just beginning to learn my way around the area that I believe may be correctly referred to as Weardale; although the use of that term may be an incorrect assumption on my part. Anyway, I am having fun learning about this place and the surrounding countryside. My research in this area concerns John HETHERINGTON of Redheugh & Anthony BURDESS of Coalcleugh b/b ca. 1720-1740 along with William BURDESS (Anthony's son) whose b/b place remains undetermined. Although the above referenced locations for both John & Anthony are given in a marriage record for their children, as the places of their residences, I do not necessarily believe that the father's were b/b in these locations. I am about the business of trying to locate the bap entries for all of the above plus an Elizabeth HETHERINGTON; daughter of John. Anyone know anything that will help to direct my search? Bette > Hi Bette, there is a Wolf Cleugh in West Allendale, NBL also. 1. [DUR-NBL] TURNBULL, McCAFFERY/REY
    2. Karen Cogan
    3. Hi All, I've just rejoined this list after a long break from this branch of the family. On revisiting my information I noticed a discrepancy in some dates and have discovered my 2 x great-grandfather Andrew McCAFFREY / McCAFFERY was married twice. Andrew a coal miner was born in 1867 in Armagh, Ireland. He came England with his parents (Owen & Margaret) and siblings (Owen, Michael & John) in about 1870 and they settled in Felling, Durham. In 1881 the family had moved to Gateshead. By Andrew had married Mary TURNBULL and had a daughter Margaret Elizabeth born 1889 in Felling. By 1891 the family had moved to Seghill and later the same year Agnes was born, Ellen followed in 1893. According to the 1891 census Mary was born in Eckford, Scotland about 1871. I believe Mary died between 1893 and 1898. Andrew married Ellen McCORMICK (born c.1871, Scotland) in 1898 and they had 2 children Mary born c.1898/1899 and Owen born 1901. I've tried to find a marriage for Andrew and Mary as Mary was my 2xgreat-grandmother (their daughter Margaret being my great-grandmother). I haven't been successful yet unless a mistake in the index is the answer as I've found an Alexander McCAFFREY marrying a Mary TURNBULL in the June quarter of 1888 in the Gateshead district. I have had incorrect names in the index for another family marriage but it was the surname that was wrong. I also don't know when Mary came to Durham from Scotland so if anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated although if I find the marriage I guess having her fathers name will help. If anyone has identified the above family as being part of their tree I'd love to here from you. Regards Karen Cogan West Yorkshire Also researching: MARSHALL, CARR, DEVENEY in the Northumberland, Durham & Ireland (except Marshall).
