    3. Jacquie, Did you get an e.mail from me in the past couple of days? I have been having problems with getting messages through to the list and am not sure whether those same messages are getting through to the intended subscriber too. I found proof, I think, that Catherine Logg could in no way be the mother of John Mercer shown in the census entry from 1891 that you found. If you would like to see the message that I intended sending please let me know and I will try re-sending it to you. Apologies to other listers for posting this to the list but I am trying to sort out the intermittent trouble I am having with Rootsweb, but no one seems to be able to sort it out. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain.

    1. Re: [DUR-NBL] 1829 death in North Shields
    2. Jenny De Angelis
    3. If the death happened after Civil Registration began, in July 1837, then you have to look up the death in the GRO index, General Register Office Index. You will find this index in major libraries in the UK and also on line at the Ancestry site www.acestry.co.uk You do not need to be a subscriber or to pay to view this particular index at the ancestry site, it is the only one that is free of charge on the site. Look for the death there and note the Registration District, the volume and Page number and of course the full name as given in the entry. You can then order the copy certificate from the GRO at Southport via their website. http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ paying online for the copy. Or you could contac the District registrars office that currently holds the registers for the district that the death took lace in. Look at the Genuki pages for England and then go to the County pages for either Durham or Northumberland, the county where the death took place. Once there look under the heading Civil Registraion and you should find links to the addresses of the various district registrars offices in that county. Many district Registrars offices now have an e.mail address and if you contact them to ask you may find that they will take payment by credit by either letter or telephone call but the rarely have on line payment facilities. www.genuki.org.uk If you want to check details of your person against the entry to ensure that you have the right person in the death entry you have found then you can ask the district office to check what information you have against the entry and if it agrees you will be expected to buy the copy, if it doesn't agree with the entry you will not have to buy a copy, but don't expect the registrars to give out any information, they are not allowed to. The GRO at Southport will check an entry against information you can supply for checking but they make a charge for this service approximately half the cost of a cert. copy and you will also be charged for a copy of the matching entry, if the entry does not agree with your extra information you will only be charged the checking fee and nothing more. If the death occurred prior to July 1837 then you would have to search parish registers to find the burial of the person concerned. Start with the parish church for where the person lived and work out from there. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. > Can anyone tell me please where to purchase a copy death certificate in > Northumberland?

    1. [DUR-NBL] "Cartman" occupation ca. 1849
    2. Bette McIntosh
    3. Dear Listers, I have received a 1849 death certificate for a member of my family who died in 1849 @ "Benton, Red Houses", NBL. The occupation was given as "Cartman". The informant's residence was given as "Killingworth". I find on an Internet search... Carman/Charman/Carrier/Carter/Cartman Driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. Carmen were often employed by railway companies for local deliveries and collections of goods and parcels. Modern day van driver. Also sometimes someone who drove horse-drawn trams was called a Carman. My question ... what was meant by the term "Cartman" during the 1849 time period? Was the job one of pushing a cart and would the cartman's occupation have been associated with the coal mines and miners or would it have been otherwise? Interestingly, at least to me, the cause of death was given as "Epidemic Cholera" something that I suspected since the wife's death occurred two day's prior. Thank you, Bette

Any help with knocking it down would be much appreciated! Regards, Eileen

    3. Diane Would very much appreciate it if you could try to find Ralph Williamson, born about 1803 Murton, Northumberland, in the 1841 Census. I don't know where he was living then (probably Earsdon) but was in Ryhope in 1861 and in Holywell in 1851. His wife is Margaret , born about 1811 or 1812 also in Murton, and children till that point were Ralph, Francis, William, John and Ann was born sometime in 1841, all near Earsdon. If you could find him in 1831 before his marriage in 1832 with his parents that would be a great help in getting the next link. I really appreciate your effort, thank you. Sandy

    2. Nivard Ovington
    3. Hi Patrick Civil registration did not start until 1837 so there will not be a death certificate. You would need to search Parish Registers for a burial for your person, to do that you really need to know the Parish they died in. There are some burials listed on the National Burial Index (not exactly National I know but thats its name) Coverage can be checked here http://www.ffhs.org.uk/General/Projects/NBI.htm The majority of the NBI can be checked here http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ Its pay per view but very cheap. If you post the name and details, perhaps others may have some information on burials in North Shields? Do keep in mind though, that the detail is sparse on burial information, it may however lead you on to finding a monumental inscription, should one exist. This also says that Catherine is John (H) mother - according to this census there's only 10yrs difference??? The LIDDLE boy's mother Mary Liddle (nee Logg) died 11/9/1890 from a fall down stairs at home - her husband Robert Liddle was a Mariner - I'm not sure if its him but I found a Robert Liddle in 1891 on the SS Commodore.
