Maybe Joseph wasn't from Houghton Le Spring originally so you would need to look elsewhere for his baptism etc., He could be from a parish whose parish records are not included in the IGI or he could be of Houghton Le Spring but the dates covered for that parish by the IGI do not extend to the period when he might have been baptised there. It could be that the mother Hannah had gone back to her native parish to have her child baptised. She may have gone back to her parents home to have her first child, many girls did this. It could just be that Joseph and Hannah were from elsewhere but moved to Houghton Le Spring because it was close to where Joseph worked and they ended up having their children baptised there, perhaps they moved on from Houghton Le Spring and had more children elsewhere, there are only 5 possible children shown baptised to them at Houghton. The IGI shows bapts. for their possible children Ann 1787, Thomas 1785, Elizabeth 1783, Hannah 1789 as well as Eleanor in 1793 all under the same batch number of P000471 for Houghton Le Spring. I also found the marriage at Houghton Le Spring batch number M000471 for a Joseph Atkison to a Hannah Hills 19th May 1792 which would fit very well with that above baptisms, starting with Elizabeth in 1783. Not all that the LDS has on films is included in the IGI, there is a lot that is sitting in the LDS archive in Salt Lake City but which has not been put into the IGI, but almost all of what is in that archive is available to hire on microfilm at LDS centres around the world. Check the IGI coverage for the parish records of Houghton Le Spring by searching the Family History Library Catalogue at the familysearch site, making a place search for Houghton Le Spring, (remember though that if you put in the name of the County then only put in Durham and not the word County as the LDS dont' recognise the correct title of this county). Then in the list of results of your search look under Church Records to see what films are available to hire and check what dates of those registers the LDS has on film. Then go back to the list of results of your search and look under Church Record Indexes. Looking under Church Record Indexes look for the title "Computer Printout etc,. etc., " that title refers to the LDS computer printouts for that parish and will give you the dates of covereage and the batch numbers to go with them for records that have been included to date into the IGI. You need to look at the link in the top right corner of the page View Film Notes in order to see the dates of coverage. The IGI shows another Eleanor Atkinson bapt., Mar. 1797 on batch number C064861 at Old Meeting or Corn Market Chapel, High St. Sunderland. Where the father is John and the mother is Ann, Hannah and Ann are often interchangable I have found. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. The IGI gives the parents of my recently discovered 4X grandmother , Eleanor ATKINSON christened on 12 March , 1793 in Houghton Le Spring as Joseph ATKINSON and Hannah. I cannot find anything on a Joseph but there are several likely siblings for Hannah (maybe WEDDELL) and a John ATKINSON . Did the IGI make a mistake with the name Joseph? Has anyone access to these parish records that could help me? Cheers, Dorothy on Vancouver Island
Robert, I understand passenger records up to 1923 or 1924 for NSW arrivals are at State Records at Kingswood in Western Sydney (after that they are at the National Archives). www.records.nsw.gov.au/staterecords/ I think they are in the process of redoing their website so some of the links are temporarily out of action. You can find info on passengers and shipping and how to access the records this way: from the main screen click on the link "The State archives" (which is under the sub-heading "this website includes three sub-sites"). on the next screen click on "archives in brief" which is in the left column under the ship on next screen click item 1 shipping and arrival records Alternatively, findmypast is conjunction with the UK National Archives is putting shipping records on-line - at the moment only 1890-1909 but this is an on-going project to list passengers to around 1960. There is a charge for viewing the records. www.findmypast.com/ Could your WALTON family have been on this ship? 1914 Jun 11 Ulimaroa <http://www.blaxland.com/ozships/events/5/462.htm#17328> New Zealand to Hobart (1914 Jun 11) The ship may have made other voyages, but I found this on this website and checked arrivals 1914 www.blaxland.com/ozships/ Hope this helps. I wonder if SKS could assist? It would seem by information on their Death Certificates; that my Grandparents; Robert & Dorothy Ann WALTON; together with their 2 children, Madeline & Robert; emigrated to Australia in1914 and by ship? A Cousin has my Grandfather, "Robert WALTON to Australia 25 Nov 1913 by T.S. SULIMAROA"? I "Googled" last night and could find no such ship. I also question the date, as my Grandfather, Robert WALTON was "Initiated into Borough Lodge No.424 (Masonic Lodge), Durham, 15 Dec 1913". If anyone has ready access to the shipping records; could you please advise if there was such a ship or if not; what it was or may have been? I am also very keen to learn what ship they actually did emigrate to Australia on? If you can assist in any way; I would be ever so very grateful. Kindest regards; Robert KEMSLEY Australia

Carol I had a terrible time with the 1871 census. names spelt incorrectly, places of birth incorrect and ages incorrect. You really have to look at all name options. For example the Jane I was looking was listed as James!! Peter
I would be most grateful if someone out there can tell me of the cemeteries in Prudhoe. My ggrandfather Surtees Armstrong died in West Wylam 1914. Have searched Mary Magdalene Prudhoe burials, also Ovingham burials - no result. I know there is a cemetery at Edgewell, would this be Prudhoe Civil Cemetery? When did burials commence at Edgewell? Would be more than happy to receive any information on the above. Dorothy Sydney NSW

Morning all I was on www.ancestry.co.uk late last night looking for a marriage record and noticed a new set of records. British Army WW1 Pension Records 1914 - 1920 Release One. At the moment they have only got records for surnames beginning with A and B but it looks like a fabulous resource. I found my great grandfathers sign up papers. He joined the army four days after his wedding and it has his address and occupation and even his actual signature. I'm so pleased! I can't wait till the other records are available. I also found early discharge papers for another relative in 1917 so there appears to be a range of records held in this database. Regards Net
Many thanks to Margaret, Jan, Tim, Dorothy and Bridget for locating Rekendyke Lane for me. My Great Great grandparents were married on 24 Nov 1857 by Father Edmund Joseph Kelly in the Roman Catholic Chapel, Cuthbert Street (Green Street), South Shields. I was intrigued by this as I'd never heard of a Roman Catholic Chapel before! You can read about the chapel and indeed Father Kelly in Michael J. Young's account of Catholic Jarrow reproduced on Patrick Brennan's excellent site: http://www.donmouth.co.uk/local_history/St_Bedes/catholic_jarrow.html. And the answer is RekenDyke Lane, South Shields, Tyne and Wear, NE33 1SG. (thanks to the search option at www.oldmaps.uk which will show you an 1862 map of the area.) Searching on www.streetmap.co.uk shows it to be a very short lane - so short that there is not enough space on the map to show its name in full. It is there, however, named as "Reke L", about 300m from the river. Alternatively, go to http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ and enter the postcode to see a current map of the area, but at a scale too large to see street names. in 1881, there were 13 households recorded in Reken Dyke Lane, Census Place Westoe, Durham,England PRO Ref RG11 Piese 5017 Folio 26 Page 44 and 45. No McIvors in 1881, however. Cheers, Tim S.
