    3. Dear Fellow Listers, I just received my husband's GGrandfather's death certificate. I'm curious about his "Occupation". According to his Death cert, he died at age 71 years with the occupation of "Farmer". Underneath this, is added (Master). What is the significance of this? Thanks muchly, Margaret Taylor Medicine Hat, Alberta Researching: Snowdon (Witton Le Wear), Kidd (Eggleston), Anderson (Middleton-upon-Tees), Hutchinson (Barnard's Castle), Davidson (Eldson) and Butament (Alnwinton)

    1. [DUR-NBL] Return of Bill B, ROBSON, EDGAR,GILDERT,DAVISON
    2. bill borodenko
    3. Hi, I just fell off several lists about 4 years ago. I thought roots web had finished! Anyway partly to remind myself..... GILDERT- James was the head born abt 1802. He was a gardener & from christenings etc he was in Newcastle in 1831& the family moved to Eighton Banks by 1833. Sarah Gildert was his wife born 1804 in Berwick on Tweed and is on her own with the children by 1841(as Gildard)Ind means & 1851(as Gildart). In 1851 she is listed as a pauper but not a widow. 1881(Geldert) school caretaker aged 76 I could not trace their marriage. He seems to have just gone off the radar, but the real frustration is not finding him in 1841 or 1851 & getting an idea of where he came from! In 1841 Sarah is listed as "by Independent means".Was this just used to hide poverty? I have no idea of Pauper rules & provisions. James was the eldest son & died in 1848 aged 18 of TB . I have not seen his baptism. Jane was the eldest daughter & was also a pauper in 1851(Hamilton) as she was widowed by the age of 19 with a 1 year old baby. The next husband is also a miner(Dodd) & dies quite young leaving her with 6 children by 1871(Excluding 21 year old Sarah Hamilton). Henry was born in 1833 & his male line ends with Ernest who dies in 1935 in Gateshead. He was a Coal Miner & lived to be 71 !!!! Ernest Gildert married Mary Ann (Minnie) Turnbull. They have 7 children.5 girls & 2 boys. The boys die in infancy. One girl dies on the same day as the one born but is named differently, and another lives just over 1 year. 3 girls marry & I have got stuck ! Mary Isabella (Bella) b 1891 marries Charles Tomlinson & she dies in Thursby 30/9/1912. I can't see a marriage anywhere........... Elizabeth Lenora (Nora) b 1896 marries Reuben Vassey in 1920 at the Unity Church , Coatsworth Church, Gateshead (Tick) Sarah Annie (Annie) b 1898 is down as being the wife of Frederick Ernest Robson by 1931 living at 212 Windsor Ave, Saltwell & I can't see a marriage anywhere........... Any ideas on how to progress further would be most appreciated. Thanks EDGARS are from Kirkpatrick Fleming. James 1849-1912 was the first to venture down to Gateshead/Wrekenton DAVISON Elizabeth b April 13 1833, Birtley Not found christening. Father was James in the Royal Navy but the marriage entry in Newcastle 1858 to Henry Gildert shows her father to be Joseph a Lead Miner. She just put X as her mark. That has led to much frustration ...any ideas how I should go from here? Elizabeth's husband was Henry Gildert mentioned above. Henry died aged 36 from Asthma & TB in Wreckenton in 1869 & the informant was James Davidson.............. ROBSON James born in 1887, died 1957. James was at 21 Nursery Lane, Windy Nook when he Married Margaret Edgar 28th March 1910 in Gateshead & they lived at 22 Longbank His father was Thomas a Fire Man at Chemical Works. The mother was Mary but in 1901 a Matilda fits better...... especially with brothers Jack, Thomas & sister Mary. There is a William too but I'm stuck waiting for the 1911 census.......... I hope you haven't all fallen asleep. Please help in anyway. And if there is anyone connected anywhere then give us a shout. Thanks again Bill B

    3. Hi listers If anyone is researching the Pringle family and would like any of the following certificates I have bought by mistake, please let me know and I will post one to you. Birth certificate. George Pringle. born 24/7/1876. County of Harraton. Father Robert Birbeck. Mother Elizabeth Birbeck formerly Pringle. Father James Pringle. Mother Ann Pringle formerly Armstrong. There are 2 copies of these – how stupid of me :-( Death certificate. George Pringle. Died 1/1/1947. Sub-district Whickham. Aged 81 years. 3. Could someone explain the connection between Newbrough Chapel and the parish of Warden? I have a baptism in 1812 where the family's abode is given as no [sic] Thorngrafton, Haltwhistle parish, and the baptism is at Newbrough Chaple [sic], Warden parish. I'd have thought the chapel would be in the parish of Newbrough. The details are from the transcription on the familyhistoryonline web site. Cheers, Ian

    1. Re: [DUR-NBL] Stamp Duty Paid on Wills
    2. Just to add that between 1797 and 1845 there were several rates which were 1%, 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6%, 8%, and 10%. I don't know to which years they applied, but the main categories were 1%, 3%, and 10%. Regards Stan Mapstone

    1. Re: [DUR-NBL] Stamp Duty Paid on Wills
    2. 1796 William Pitt brought in death duties [called Legacy Duty] for the first time in his budget to pay for the Napoleonic War. This was levied on estates [not land] worth more than £20, had a sliding scale depending on which relative the legacy was left to. In 1805 and 1815 it was varied, and also in 1853 when transfers of land at death were included. The Rates varied at different times and I think that when first imposed did not apply to direct descendants and varied from 2% to 6% to collateral relations and 'strangers in blood' Later husband or wife were exempt from duty. On a legacy to a child or parent or any lineal descendant or ancestor of the deceased the duty was 1%. A legacy to a brother or sister or their descendants was taxed at 3%; to an uncle or aunt or their descendants it was 5%; to a great uncle or great aunt or their descendants it was 6%; to any other relation or any stranger in blood it was 10%. Probate Duty was payable on the total sum left by the deceased on a sliding scale starting at 10 shillings for sums between £20 and £100 if there was a will. Regards Stan Mapstone
