Hi Jennifer If you go to the Durham County Council site at the URL below and select from the left hand menu "Registrars Certificates" you can then search for the birth of Eleanor James between the years 1841-1850, no need to put in any other detail. I did this and got two results, one registered in 1841 and the other in 1846. You could vary the year range of your search, perhaps to search 1837-1840 just in case she was born near the end of 1840, there is one shown as born 1840. All three of these entries were at Durham Central office as it happens. If you click on link to the View details of the entry, of either one of the results, you will see that you can order a copy and pay for it on line. You will also see that you can send a query before ordering. If you know the names of your Eleanor James' parents then you can send a query and ask for the entry you have selected to be checked to see if the parents names match with what you have. If it does match then you can order a copy of the entry with confidence that it is the right Eleanor James birth. If it doesn't match then won't have to pay anything and can continue searching for her birth. You could ask for the other entries found to be checked against the parents names you might have, especially that 1840 entry. The URL is http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/Online+Services+-+Durham+County+Council+Information+Service+-+Online+Services You need to get this URL all on one line, just expand this e.mail to full screen to do so. Hope this helps. Regards Jenny DeAngelis. Spain. > I am looking for my ancestor Eleanor JAMES in Co Durham. Jennifer, You should be able to order a copy of the certificate direct from Durham County Council. If all goes well, this link should get you to the relevant page: http://www.durham.gov.uk/gro/bi184150.nsf/newintermediate?openform&order=C0561135050405042007$&idpass=bi184150B75DCA8AA7782A1F80256FE20049344D Cheers, Tim S.

Jennifer This seems to be an error on Free BMD as I read the page number as 88 rather than 38 March 1841 Durham &c XXIV However there is another Eleanor James registered in the Mar 1840 Durham &c vol XXIV page 65 and an Eleanor James registered in Gateshead June 1842 XXIV 131, so you should be sure that you have the right one. Before you write to the GRO again, someone else should verify what I found - as the numbers are not that clear. Hello list- I am looking for my ancestor Eleanor JAMES in Co Durham. I found her birth on FreeBMD, listed in March quarter 1841 as: James, Eleanor Durham, vol 24, page 38. When I ordered this from the GRO, they said "We have not produced a certificate as there is no trace of the above mentioned person at the reference you quoted." Could SKS please take a look at the scan on freeBMD and see if you read it differently, or have any other suggestions as to why this happened and what I should do next? Thanks Jennifer Iowa, USA
Thanks Stan - it makes sense doesn't it? It either went on a long way or there were a large number of houses/dwellings crammed in, judging by the numbering system. Looking at the old map they were set out in squares. The township of Iveston was the south side and Leadgate portion of Iveston on the north side. Regards Stan Mapstone
I should imagine that it was named Irish street after the huge influx of Irish due to the famine...my lot arrived from County Down in the late1840s...and when I checked the census many in the street were of the same heritage William Johnson and wife Jane arrived 1847cc with children Samuel bn C Down 1839 William bn C Down 1841 James bn C Down 1848 then Horace bn Bellington 1849 David bn Bellington 150 Samuel....(married Mary Liddell Oct 1858 in Gateshead) and had 8 known children including my ggrandmother Isabella who married Edward Charlton and came to NSW AUS early 1900s with 4 children Christene
The description of the enumeration district mentions Mr. Charlton's Irish Foundry, so I guess that Irish Street is a street associated with the foundry. Regards Stan Mapstone
Hi Jan, It is Irish Street, but was no longer there in the 1881 Census. Regards Stan Mapstone
Thanks Margaret I thought it was! I wonder why it was so named and when? Any ideas anyone? Hi List In tracking someone in the 1861 census, I've come further forward and looked for them in the 1871. The details of the person (Michael Small) are not relevant to my question, which is was there a street as named above? The transcript I'm looking at has it as High St, which seems unlikely. Could someone take a look and see what you think? The reference is RG10/4959/F116 p 37. Thanks! Jan

Dear Stan, Many thanks indeed for your replies on Wapping and Whelp Letch. That's great. As ever, I very much appreciate your help and knowledge. With these details, I realise that I've actually been to, or near, both places in the past, without ever knowing they would cross my path in genealogy:-(( Kind regards, Yvonne > From: Stanmapstone@aol.com [mailto:Stanmapstone@aol.com] Sent: 03 April 2007 09:03 To: dur-nbl@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [DUR-NBL] Where are WAPPING and WHELP LETCH, Co. There is a fiche of Baptism, Marriage & Burials 1798-1812 (St Cuthbert was the parish church) but no MACE or similar names are listed. Perhaps they came to Darlington from elsewhere. It does not seem to be a common name in the North east. Hello Margaret, I don't have Ancestry, but I've checked the 1881 and found Charles (I think) at Bishopwearmouth age 55, a marine (seaman) with wife Christiana and 6 children. There is also a death registration in the Dec. quarter 1886, Sunderland vol 10a page 285, for Charles Mace age 61, so both of these put his birth around 1825. The local library has films of St Cuthbert's parish registers which I'll check on my next visit later this week. It should be a lot easier than having to check through a possible 10 years of entries. Regards, Colin She is researching the MACE family and is having great difficulty finding the parents of Charles MACE, born Darlington, Durham........ census info has his birth from 1825 to 1835. If anyone has a Parish Register birth/baptism index or CD I would so appreciate a look-up. Many thanks in advance Marg >From the Beautiful British Columbia Cariboo Region, Canada

Hi Karen No guarantee its the same one but if you go to http://maps.google.co.uk/ Enter Henry Street South Shields it will take you to a Henry St still there today Perhaps others may know if its likely to be the same one Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Admin for OVINGTON - HAYLOCK - SEYMOUR Lists > Hi to everyone, > > I was just wondering if anyone out there, could let me know if they have > heard of a Stenry Street or Henry Street in South Shields. > > I received two certificates back this morning for two of my grandad's > siblings and on one of them it says he was born at (and it looked like) > Stenry or > Henry Street, South Shields in 1918 > > I would be grateful if anyone knows which is correct, (or anything that > could be it), if they would point me in the right direction, as the > writing was > quite hard to read. > > Regards > Karen
Hi - If the certificate is a hand written copy, as opposed to a photocopy, then put your question to the authority who issued it to you.
