Hi List I hope someone can help. I have found the marriage of Abraham Ambler and Mary Ann Newton in Houghton le Spring. According to the Joiner Marriage Index it was on 3 December 1832. Paul Joiner does not have details of the church or any other family information. According to later census returns neither Abraham or Mary Ann were from Durham so I really need to know if there are any other details on the marriage record. If anyone can help I would be very grateful. Many thanks Net
Hello, In 1840 my 3xgreat grandfather Thomas HINDMARCH married Margaret MYERS (born as Margaret MILNER in 1802 in Sunderland) in the Parish Church, Sunderland. His profession is recorded as "Superintendent of the Durham Railway" and his address Thomas Street. Unfortunately Thomas is not with his wife at North Quay, Monkwearmouth on 1841 census and there is nothing to say whether Margaret was a widow or not. I believe three children Margaret, Elizabeth & Thomas (born c1843-1844) are his and he therefore must have died between 1844-1846 when his wife Margaret married William GIBSON a pilot from Monkwearmouth. Any help in researching any of these names would be appreciated. I am particularly interested in finding more about Thomas' profession as "Superintendent of the Durham Railway". Also, does anyone know where Thomas Street was or is? Thanks for any help, Regards, Mark Etheridge.

New parishes were not created from parts of this parish until 1838. See http://www.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/dro.nsf/vwebplaces You will only get the names of the parties, and either 'of this parish' or their parishes. The names of witnesses, if they were minors (under 21) or of 'full age' (over 21), and the name of the officiating priest. Regards Stan Mapstone

The Durham and Sunderland Railway opened in 1836 carrying both passengers and goods traffic to the Sunderland Moor Station, with staithes on Low Quay for coal. The railway was originally worked by eight fixed engines, and was the longest public railway to be operated this way. It ran from Sunderland Moor via Ryhope and Seaton to Merton where the line diverged to Haswell and to Sherburn the station for Durham. From Sherburn the passengers were conveyed by stage coach to the city. Regards Stan Mapstone
My 2Gr-Grandfather Thomas Horn died in Coxhoe on 5 October 1896 at the age of 75. I was wondering where he possibly might be buried. I believe he was a Methodist. Are there church cemeteries or public cemeteries in Coxhoe? Could anyone help me on this? Thank you, Sharon Peot

The Durham & Sunderland Railway had a Station on the Town Moor, so it was probably the Thomas Street off Prospect Row. A Superintendent, aka general superintendent, or superintendent of the line, was responsible for the handling of all descriptions of traffic at the station, and sometimes performed the duties of a passenger manager. Hi List, I know there are a lot of big hearted people out there and I'm hoping I might be able to find one. I have a big favour to ask. I knew my grandparents left Durham and came out to Australia around 1912 and I have now been able to confirm this on "Find My Past" http://www.findmypast.com/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action It costs 5 units unless you have purchased a subscription. The only trouble is the minimum 60 units costs £6.95 and a Voyager Subscription costs £15. All I want to know is the name of the ship they came out on, which is equivalent to about 58p and I can't justify spending £6.95 for 1 search. So...... I would be really grateful if someone who has units or a subscription, could check the transcript for me. :-) many, many thanks in advance Libby Central West NSW If it's any help to any one, I have the 1881 Census and the Rookwood Cemetery CD (Sydney NSW).
Dear listers, I would like to request assistance in finding out more about my Cowey ancestors. Would anyone with access to the parish records for Whickham please do a lookup for me. I am interested particularly in Robert Cowen and his wife Ann Whelton (father believed to be Cuthbart Whelton) They had four children that I know of. Family information as follows. Robert Cowen, born about 1670 in Whickham, died 1715 in Whickham. I believe his father was Christopher Cowen, though the name was spelt with xofpher or similar (Appologies, I am not 100% sure) His wife, Ann Whelton, bap 23 Nov 1651 at Whickham Their children were:- Christopher Cowen, bap 9 Aug 1696 Mathew Cowen, bap 28 July 1700 Robert Cowen, bap 23 May 1702 Nicholas Cowey/Cowen, born about 1703 and bap 22 Aug 1703 at Whickham, He died 1766 and is buried at Chester le Street Nicholas went on to marry Isabella Watson at Lamesley and they had eight children. Best Regards, Raymond Cowey
Hello Raymond It is possible, but highly unlikely that Ann Whelton, bap 23 Nov 1651 at Whickham d of Cuthbert is the mother of the children than you have cited - she would have been 45, 49, 51 and 52 when they were born Christopher Cowen, bap 9 Aug 1696 Mathew Cowen, bap 28 July 1700 Robert Cowen, bap 23 May 1702 Nicholas Cowey/Cowen, born about 1703 and bap 22 Aug 1703 at Whickham There is no further information about either Ann or Robert m 1695 in the Wood's transcript of the Whickham BMDs There is an Ann Walton father Christopher bpt 20 Jun 1671 at Whickham - she is more likely to be your lady - less likely but still possible is Ann Walton bpt 17 Jul 1664 father Matthew I couldn't find a likely candidate for Robert Cowen/Cowey anywhere unlikely but possible is Robert Cowen son of Robert bpt Addington YKS 29 Oct 1678 Heather
I cannot find the deaths recorded of either Thomas Rowbotham (born 1833 and living in 1901 with his daughter and Tom Galley in Houghton-le-Spring) or of Robert Welsh Rowbotham (born 1854 and living in 1901 on Front Street, Newbottle, working as Deputy Overman. They were my gg and g paternal grandfathers respectively and both continue to evade me!
Thank you very much to Heather (and the other people who responded to my E-mail off list) in response to my request for help with the 1851 census, with thanks to this list i was even contacted by a decendent of the family i am researching. I have a web-page if anyone would like to take a look, you might connect with one or more of the surnames there. I have upwords of 50 surnames now and am still adding information to it. http://uk.geocities.com/mybry53/index.htm Thank you Carole Robinson.
I looking for baptism records in the Seaton Delaval area. Margery Jane Simpson was born about 1827, her father was Thomas Simpson a bookkeeper. I understand there would be some parish registers, but are they available for viewing? Thank you, Norma in Texas
I would just like to thank everyone who helped with this enquiry. Very much appreciated, thanks again. Jan.
