    1. [DUR-NBL] Painting of Alexander DIXSON - c 1840s
    2. Alison
    3. Dear all, Alexander Ogilvie DIXSON, my 3x great-grandfather, was at various times Collector of Customs for Newcastle and Stockton and died in May 1861. He is buried at Jesmond (I have a photo of his gravestone). In his will of July 1850 he left to his daughter Julia, among other things, a portrait of himself, stating that "after the decease or marriage of my said daughter which shall first happen, then upon trust to sell the same (that is all the other bits he had left her) except the portrait of myself...". Julia died unmarried at Headington, Bucks, in 1884, and her only surviving family of nieces and nephews were still living in Newcastle. These nieces and nephews were the children of Julia's sister Jane Angellica, wife of the solicitor Henry STORY of Newcastle. I had wondered whether perhaps after Julia's death the painting was returned to the family in Newcastle or perhaps made its way back to the Customs House in Newcastle or Stockton, or to some other location in the Newcastle area. If anyone knows anything about the painting, I'd be keen to hear of it - I'd like to get a photo if at all possible. With thanks Alison :-) Sydney Australia

    3. can I extend Jenny DeAngelis comments on the above - a number of the bishops transcripts have been used in the batch inputs to the familysearch IGI so in those cases a search of the IGI may focus the search for an individual to a particular time. I use the hugh wallis website to determine which transcripts are on the IGI. kind regards John Ferguson a durham lad now living in east yorkshire

    1. [DUR-NBL] Thomas
    2. Ruth
    3. Would anyone be willing to look up an entry in the Brancepeth Church register? Thomas was baptised 23/10/1763, the son of Jane Jopling. I have assumed that he was illegitimate, but it occurred to me that Jane could have been a widow. Does it say anything in the original entry to suggest which is true? I would be most grateful to have the answer & know for sure, even though, if he was illegitimate, it would mean that I am not a "Jopling" after all! The year 1763 is worked out from his age at death & when he married he was `of Brancepeth`- which does not necessarily mean he was born there. There was a baptism on 06/03/1763 at Kirk Merrington- all I have there is that he was son of John Jopling. Ruth in Perth Australia.

    1. Re: [DUR-NBL] Is there an Surname Index for Diocese of Durham Bishops'Transcripts
    2. Jenny DA
    3. As someone else has told you in a reply, there is not index to there online BTs at the familysearch site. But you can move through the pages more quickly by changing the page number in the "Goto" box at the top of the page. If, for example, the particular BTs you are looking at had 100 pages covering years 1800-1840 and you are looking for an event in 1820 then you can change the number in the Goto box to 50 and click the button. Begin there looking to see what year is covered by page 50. If page 50 has a year very close to 1820 then you can go back and forth from there by using the Previous and Next buttons. Or, if page 50 is way off the mark, change the number in the Goto box again to bring you nearer to where you want to be. It is all a bit hit and miss but it does mean by doing this you can skip many pages and get close to where you need to be for the year you want to look at. You just need to make a calculation about where your year of interest will fall within the given number of pages and years covered by them. Regards Jenny DeAngelis Spain. <<>I wondered if anyone had completed a Surname index for the transcripts and > if so if this was available online?>>
