Hello Bill, Trade was slow. The Durham owners (but not Northumberland) wanted a 7.5% reduction in wages. After three ballots, the miners voted overwhelmingly to strike. Strike started 9 March 1892. On the 8th, the owners at Brokenback Colliery near Bishop Auckland issued a notice that no more free coal would be given to the miners - next morning the men struck. Source: THE IMPENDING STRIKE The Newcastle Weekly Courant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, March 12, 1892; Issue 11330 THE MINERS' STRIKE The Newcastle Weekly Courant (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England), Saturday, March 19, 1892; Issue 11331 It lasted 12 weeks, wasn't settled until June after the intervention of the Bishop of Durham, and the miners had to take a 10% reduction. Hi Nora, This site http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl will give you the GRO reference for her birth registration, assuming that it was registered, as there was no penalty on parents for non-registration until 1875. In some parts of the country as many as 15% of all births were not registered during the first decades after 1837. Many believed that registration was not necessary if the child was baptised. I'm trying to figure out how to order a birth certificate for my gg aunt who was born in the Village of New Hartley (mining village) around September 1850. It will establish a link between me and my great grandparents, William Avery and Margaret Dawson of Longbenton, NBL, UK. Thanks. Nora Avery Florida USA
Hello fellow Listers In addition to my Robertson families I am also seeking information on the ANDERSON families of Belford, NBL (North Durham). My 3x grandmother was Catharine ANDERSON, a daughter of John ANDERSON, a labourer. She was born in Belford on 21/1/1819 In St John's Church Newcastle, on 7/5/1840, Catharine ANDERSON married Robert SIMM, a bootmaker formerly of Felton NBL, After marriage and the Bap.of their fist child, Anne, at Newcastle on 18/7/1841, this family then moved to Warkworth, where the remaining children were born. John SIMM alias SIMMS (my g.grandfather) was born 5/8/1843. Bap Church of St Lawrence 27/8/1843. On 20/1/1868, in S.S., he married Isabella WATSON a daughter of Robert Jobson WATSON and Barbara WATSON, nee RENNISON and also known as RENNOLDSON. Margaret SIMM Bap. Church of St Lawrence 26/4/1846 - no further record James SIMM, Bap.Church of St Lawrence18/6/1848. He married Mary Nichol Catholic Chapel Pilgrim St Newcastle on 8/7/1867. Robert SIMM, Bn. 13/1/1850, Bap.Church of St Lawrence 20/1/1850 - Died 22/1/1850, Bur. 22/1/1850. Isabella SIMM, Bap.Church of St Lawrence 7/3/1852 - No further record. In conclusion I am seeking further details of the SIMM siblings Margaret & Isabella. We have already contacted some of James SIMMs descendants, who reportedly were a family that became out of contact with each other. As for John SIMMS family we have remained in contact with most family members. Three of his sons moved to Toronto, Ont CA. Also I would like to discover whether Catharine/Catherine ANDERSON had any other siblings. Her marriage certificate only mentioned her father. Kind regards to all Alan Bird Brisbane Qld. Aus.

Hi All, I'm very lucky to be the current keeper of my grnadfather's cash book. He was called John Henry Ayton and lived in the Consett/Shotley Bridge area for most of his adult life. He kept a cash book detailing all of his expenses from 1922 until 1935. It is very interesting reading and you get a real flavour of the family from what they spent as well as finding out what everyday things cost. However an entry has me wondering as in April 1927 Grandad paid 6s 6d for a History of Thornley. I'm presuming that this is a book and wondered if anyone knows anything about it??? The Ayton family lived in Thornley village--Thornley near Tow Law that is-- in the 1800s so I would see the interest that Grandad would have in the village. Obviously I too would like to see this publication if it so exists. Any help would be appreciated yours John Ayton _________________________________________________________________ 25GB of FREE Online Storage – Find out more http://clk.atdmt.com/UKM/go/134665320/direct/01/

Hello All: My great-grandmother, Elizabeth Hannah Howard, was married to Samuel Brown in 1862 in Halvergate, Norfolk. She and Samuel had 12 children (including my grandfather, John Henry Brown), some of whom died in childhood. The family later moved to Newcastle where they appear in the 1891 census. Samuel apparently died in 1895 in Tynemouth and Elizabeth remarried in 1898 to William Cook, a widower (b. 1851 in Bedlington). In 1901 William and Elizabeth were living together, in Gateshead, with four children, all with the last name of Cook. Three of the children appear to be the adopted children of Samuel Brown (Alexander, or Abraham (18), Edith (13) and Isabella M or Malo (11)). The fourth, Edward Cook (9), is William's son by his first wife. Does anyone have any further information that would help me track the descendants? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tod Brown Maine, USA
