Hi Ian, Do not use the "search" in this line; Home | About | Facilities | Our Holdings | Family History | Learning Zone | Contact Us | Maps | Search Instead click on | Our Holdings | then go down the page and click on "search for relevant items on-line". then on the next page "search the database" which will take you to http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/register.nsf/$$searchdcc where you can enter a keyword. You will see at the top of this page "DRO Database | Information Leaflets | Durham Collieries" click on 'Information Leaflets' then select PDF Format which should take you to http://nd.durham.gov.uk/recordoffice/usp.nsf/pws/Durham+Record+Office+-+Our+ Holdings+-+Information+Leaflets+-+PDF+Format from where you can download the leaflet you need. I hope this helps. Stan Mapstone
Mary, try the following search: Address: belle* [note the asterisk for wildcard search] County: Durham District: Sunderland I got 72 hits, including addresses in Belle Vue Road, Sunderland [note Vue not View]. Dear Listers, 1911 does not seem to be my year! I failed to find a great uncle Robert Allan but as Kelly's Dirctory of 1914 shows him at 18, Belle View Road, Sunderland I then tried a place search. The only Belle View it brings up is in Ryton, Gateshead. Can it be that Belle View Road wasn't built in 1911 or is there some other explanation? Best wishes, Mary

Hello Looking to start a search into a relitve that was in the WW1 about 1914 to the end .Came from the Weardale area of Durham. Apart from his name and birth John Grey/Gray born 24 April 1896 Stanhope, I do not know his regiment or where station during his time. Jeff
Hello All: My great-grandfather, Samuel Brown, died in 1895 and his death is recorded in the register in Tynemouth (10b/147). I have yet to send for the death certificate, but was wondering if there would have been an obituary or death notice published in local newspapers. If so, could someone advise me as to where to look for such or how to obtain a copy? Any other information would also be appreciated. Thanks, Tod Maine, USA
I am searching for relatives of Alan Wilson ,he was a police constable at Edmundbyers in Northumberland he commited suicide and left a widow Winifred ,and two children (David and Patricia) I understand there is a link with Kift and Henderson who resided in or around County Durham
Hi Jeff You have a bit of a mountain to climb unfortunately There are 65 John GREYs in the medal cards index and 750 John GRAYs, without knowing the Regiment the only possible identifier is if the address is mentioned (only approx 2% have an address listed) If he joined up at the start of the War there is more likelihood of him joining a Durham regiment but that is by no means certain Only approximately one third of service records survived WW2 (ironically) so it can be pot luck if your mans survived Do you have anything at all on him, photo's, medals, post cards, family stories etc, try and examine all avenues to see if there is a Regiment mentioned which would narrow the field If you have access to Ancestry, check through the service records to see if there is anything to latch onto, next of kin for example (they are not fully indexed so you need to look through a few pages of each) If you don't have it yourself your local library is very likely to have it You will be able to discount some by birthplace or age but there are still many to look through Or if you have an LDS FHS near you, the LDS have the service records on fiche so you could order them in there Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Hello > Looking to start a search into a relitve that was in the WW1 about 1914 > to the end .Came from the Weardale area of Durham. Dear Stan, Thanks. I've twigged that page and image numbers are different so hopefully I'm getting there! Best wishes, Mary
Dear Listers, Does anyone know if the Trade Directories for Sunderland are available online? I've failed to find my great uncle Robert James Charles Allan(1868) and his wife Frances Rollins(nee Sutherland)(1864), and his son Robert Sutherland Allan(1901). Fanny was Robert's second wife and they married in 1909. Robert was an accountant but in 1901 was a commercial clerk so I'm not sure of his profession in 1911. He was in Ingleby Terrace in 1901 and as an older man in Belle View. There is a good chance he would be listed in the trade directories and if so I might be able to find him via his address.Unless they were all on holiday I'm at a loss as to why he is not readily findable in 1911. Best wishes, Mary
Hi Barb, I checked Durham records online for you but this was the only record I could find and I don't think it is the one you are looking for. Hi again I have ran a few variations and not found him I can see him in 1891 & 1901 on Ancestry with no problem and a possible Medal Card for him for WW1 but nothing on 1911online, he could have been out of the Country but as I said previously the transcription is so poor he could be there but as a jumbled up name Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Dear Ian, Nivard and Dawn, > Thanks for your suggestions. Dear Ian, Nivard and Dawn, Thanks for your suggestions. I did get Emmaline Henderson using the advanced search but even then not without a struggle! Still failing to find my other missing Hendersons though, in particular Stanley Eustace Henderson born 1884 in Dulwich. I found 2 possibles but neither was right. Have tried the wild card ones but again if anyone has an inspired thought!!! Thanks, Mary
It's worth noting that if you use the advanced fields search there are various options for first and surnames if there is some doubt about spelling. You can, for example, tick a box to search for names starting with something, so using this with emm would bring up several alternatives: emmy, emmeline, emmaline etc. There's also a place to enter names of others likely to be in the household to help narrow the search.
