Or, another possibility might be that there was a relationship prior to a group called "Loyalists" moving from the USA into the St John area. The reason for this idea; is not knowing the parents of my 1816 John Dunphy, which is my current 'brick wall.' Were they among the 'Loyalists' and did any of the family choose not to go to the wilderness of Canada leaves many possibilities. From 1816 on, I have the family well tracked. John Dunphy went on to found Dunphy Boat Company in 1855 in Eau Claire, Wisc. and the name is still known today. Prior to 1816 I don't have any info, yet. Though not a delegate for Roosevelt, he is reported to be willing to wager from $1 to $10,000 that Teddy would get the nomination and win the election stating that he had come from Topeka, Kan to find Taft supporters with enough sand to take his wager/wagers. He was reported to display enough of a poke to handle any and all takers. Does anyone have any background, stories of, or link to this colorful Dunphy? Author: ddunphynh Surnames: Dunphy/Powers 1816 out of Cork via St John New Brunswick, Canada Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunphy/398/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John Dunphy was born on a farm near St John, New Brunswick, 12 Jun 1816. He worked in logging camps and log drives along the Miramichi and Kennebeck Rivers. Story has it that his father and Scotch (Scottish) wife traveled with his G.Father to St John from Cork. John married Martha Ann Powers, daughter of a horseback traveling Baptist minister, 6 Apr 1848, in Augusta, ME. She was born in Fairfield, ME 7 Sept 1826. They had eleven children. Following work opportunities led the beginnings of their family to Stillwater, Minnesota in 1855. With a partner Dauphine they began to manufacture lumbering tools, boats, oars, paddles, peaveys, pick poles, and a sideline of stencils. Walking to Eau Claire, Wisc, he secured an old saloon with a bowling alley and brought his family there in 1861. The saloon became living quarters and the bowling alley became his boat shop. There are records of several fires and rebuildings of the business there. Another move brought him to Chippewa Falls, Wisc. to be nearer the lumber district and customer base. A later move brought the 'Dunphy Boat Company' to Oshkosh, Wisc until it's demise around 1966. Dunphy Boat Co Ads can still be found today and histories and collections are highly prized. Who were his parents, Grandfather, siblings and ancestors? Who stayed behind when he left the area to make his fortune? Did his father have siblings? Any common threads? Charlie Fisher Sun Prairie Countryman April 1, 1926 Mrs. Martin Dunphy, who passed away at her home here late last week Wednesday afternoon, March 24th, was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, Dec. 16, 1847. Her maiden name was Alice Elizabeth Croak, and while still a child in the third year of her age, she came with her parents in 1850 to America, locating in Philadelphia. After one year's residence in that city the family came to Wisconsin locating at Janesville. There she attended the Janesville schools and grew to womanhood. In 1871 she came to Sun Prairie with her brother the Rev. Walter Croak, who came here to take charge of Sacred Heart's church and parish. On Jan'y 30, 1873, she was united in marriage to Martin Dunphy, and went to reside on the farm owned by the Dunphy brothers, in Bristol, and where the family of Michael Dunphy no reside. In 1879 they moved onto the farm at the north limits of this village, and which was the family home until 1922 when she moved to her present home. Her husband passed away Jan'y 14, 1915. Four children blessed their union, all of whom survive to love and cherish her memory. They are Walter and James Dunphy of Buchanan, N. Dak., and (Mary) Mrs. H. J. Barry and Margaret Dunphy, all of this village. She also leaves nine grandchildren, two of whom, Alice and Donald Dunphy, of Buchanan, N. Dak., have been making their home with her for the past few years and attending school. Mrs. Dunphy's death came suddenly and at a time when the family were building on hope, after her rally from a long illness during the winter months. She contracted what seemed to be only a spring cold, which manifested itself the Sunday prior to her death. Like other good mothers of her generation she knew the handicaps of pioneer days-those handicaps that meant sacrifices for their families, but to them sacrifice meant devotion and love, an affection that leaves its imprint for all time in the hearts of their loved ones. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, March 27th, at Sacred Heart's church, of which she was a devoted member, Rev. J. J. Salentin officiating. Interment was in Sacred Heart's cemetery and the bearers were Jas. Conley, Conrad Weisman, Adam Gerlach, John Dolan, Thos. Howe, and John Quilty. Those from out-of-town in attendance at the funeral were Walter and James Dunphy, of Buchanan, N. Dak., Miss Mary Croke, Mrs. Thos. Heagney, Walter and Alice Heagney, P. H. Quinn, Miss Emma Croak from Janesville, Wis., Mrs. B. Warner, Mrs. And Mrs. John Quilty, Mrs. Michael Quilty, Mrs. Anna Hanley, Leona Hanley, Mrs. And Mrs. Garret Barry, and Mrs. Frances Byrne, all of Madison; Mrs. And Mrs. J. S. Cusick, P. H. Cusick, Oregon, and Miss Mary Barry, Racine. Sun Prairie Countryman July 19, 1923 Miss Nora Dunphy, who was taken ill with an attack of appendicitis one week ago last Saturday, and removed to the hospital at Madison the following day, for an operation, passed away last Friday morning at the age of 54 years, 5 months and 5 days. She submitted to an operation last week Monday and seemed to be getting along nicely until the day before her death, when a sudden change for the worse brought about the end. Nora Dunphy was born in the town of Bristol, Feb. 8, 1869, and has spent all of her life in this locality. She was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Michael Dunphy, both now deceased. Since childhood she has been frail in health, but notwithstanding her handicap she was always patient and happy, getting the most she could out of life. She leaves to mourn her demise, three sisters and three brothers. They are Edward and Kate, who are at home, Martin, in Madison, James of Idaho, Lydia, of Sun Prairie, and Mrs. Mary Gerlach, of Austin, Minn. Besides the immediate family, she leaves many friends and relatives to grieve her loss. Her parents have been dead for more than 30 years. Funeral services were held at Sacred Hearts church, Tuesday morning, July 1st, Rev. J. J. Salentin officiating, and interment was in the cemetery of that church north of the village. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral are, Mrs. Frank Broderick, of Mason City, Ia, Josephine Gerlach, of Rockford Ill., Frances Gerlach, Austin, Minn., Mrs. Purcell, of Waterloo, Jas. Dunphy, of Edaho, Dr. and Mrs. H. J. Barry, of Delavan, and Mrs. Warns, of Madison Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
