Author: ddunphynh Surnames: Dunphy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunphy/404.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Charlie, Other than obscure references to the brothers as farming landowners in No Dak and their proximity to my grandfather in Ellendale,ND, I'm not aware of a direct relationship to your branch of Dunphys. My Dunphy history begins with John Dunphy born near St John, NB,CAN Jun 1816. I don't know yet who his parents were, but family lore prepared in 1937 says that his father and mother (pure Scottish) and g.grandfather (Cork born) had established a farm near St John in New Brunswick, CAN. A short biography is available in previous postings in our Dunphy Surname Board last Feb. One as reply to the thread; 'Info on Donald Dunphy' >'Dunphys in Maine,' another at,'John Dunphy (1816) St John, New Brunswick, CAN to Wisc 1855.' These postings are in the second group of 50 found by keying into our 'Dunphy Surname Boards.' While it's possible there may have been some tie in Ireland prior to my ancestors' departure, I don't know how to make that connection yet. In my research I've often found references to the Dunphys of Green County(?), Wis area, But haven't persued their histories yet. Wish I could be more help to you. Maybe now I'll pay more attention when I trip over the newspaper articles, etc. regarding your people and try to let you know where they can be found. Best regards and good hunting, Dick ddunphynh@juno.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am curious whether you are familiar with the following family. Three Dunphy brothers, Michael, Martin, and John, settled in Dane County WI (Sun Prairie and Bristol Twp) in about 1857. They were born into a family of 9 sons and 6 daughters by James and Mary Dunphy from Waterford County Ireland (possibly the Ballyduff area). John was born in 1825, Martin in 1928, and Michael in 1834 other siblings names and dob are unknown. They arrived in the US in either 1852 or 1854-their entry point is unknown and, since they do not appear in any immigration records, they may have arrived from Canada. Their dates of death: John 3-9-1885, Michael 1-1-1891, and Martin 1-14-1915. The North Dakota connection may possibly lie with Martin's sons Walter R. Dunphy and James F. Dunphy who migrated to Jamestown ND. Does any of this seem familiar to you? If so I can send you further information. I am also curious to know what you may add to this data. Thank you. If you have trouble with the long link, you could also go to http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com and search for James Dunphy born 1861. Both ways are free to search. The results with "kohlerbj" refer to my tree. My email address is also on my tree pages. Do you have any background information on James' b. 1861 parents or grandparents other than what we know, i.e., that Bernard was born and was married in Killinchy and Mary Jane Bowman was born in Comber? James was a mining contractor (coal of course) and quite comfortably off with respect to the times. I am searching for information on Robert LOVE SMITH. The only thing I know about him is that he married Agnes Beaumont DUNPHY. Agnes was born in 1887 in Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland. She emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, after 1910. Family history says she moved to the east coast of the U.S. with Robert, and they had two children, a boy and a girl. Agnes died at the home of her sister, Lily BARR, in Verdun (Montreal) in 1944. Her burial record states that she was the widow of Robert LOVE SMITH, and her previous residence had been Barrington, Rhode Island, USA. I'd appreciate some help with information about Robert. I have an ancestor, John Dunphy born June 1816 on a farm near St John who was in the logging/lumber industry working along the Miramichi River and moving down into Gardiner,Maine after the big forest fire in NB. There is a news paper record of an Andrew Dunphy killed while logging in Maine whose body was returned to the Dunphy Cemetery at Blackville,NB by a nephew working at the same camp. Also a Dunphy? Report on Survey of Reserve Lands on South West Miramichi River by George Moorehouse-Deputy Surveyor done May-June 1818: "Thomas Dunphy-lived for 16 years on #4-Northwest side Miramichi River-joining on reserve line (5 miles above first first bounds).
