    3. I can relate to this.My Dunphy's are from New Jersey. On a website I found an obituary of my cousin who died at infancy the maiden name of his mother,my gAunt is listed as being Dumphy but it's actually spelled Dunphy. And if I'm not mistaken,my ggrandmother's TS reads Dumphy instead of Dunphy.I'm a descendant of William Dunfee and Didamia Bennett. ----- Original Message ----- From: Earle Dunphy To: DUNPHY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, April 28, 2003 7:40 PM Subject: Re: [DUNPHY] Dunphy/Dumphy Anyone Else Had This Problem? Hi... My name is Earle Dunphy. There are actually many variations of the name and spelling, but the Dunphy spelling seems to be an early one. We actually descend from the O'Donoghue Clan. Here is some history about the name. Earle The Dunphy Name Dunphy is one of the many variants derived from the ancient Irish name Ó Donnchadha, which arose in all four provinces of Ireland. They were kings of Munster, and also of Lough Lein in Kerry, and were at their height there in the 11th and 12th centuries. Regarding the origins of the name, Rod ODonoghue wrote the following: "O'Dunphy was developed as an alternative to O'Donoghue mainly in Kilkenny and Tipperary in historical times. Dunphy is the most popular variant in Canada and number three in the USA and Ireland. The O'Donoghue of the Glens is one of only twenty formally recognized Irish chiefs today. 'O'Donoghue People and Places' written by Rod O'Donoghue describes the development of this historic name from tribal times to today, together with the people." Rod formed the O'Donoghue Society which is dedicated to research on the history of the O'Donoghue clan and all other variations of the name. One can visit its web site at http://www.odonoghue.co.uk/. Another researcher (whose name I have misplaced) wrote that . in Irish, O Donnchadha denotes descendant of Donnchadh, anglice Donogh, a personal name. Several distinct septs of the name existed in early times. Of these, the principal are O'Donoghue of Desmond, O'Donoghue of Ui Maine (Hy Many) and O'Donoghue of Co. Cavan. The modern representatives of the two latter usually spell the name Donoghoe, and are still found plentifully in Counties Galway and Cavan, while the first-named are mostly in Counties Kerry and Cork, I.e. in the Desmond country. They are of the same stock as the O'Mahonys, descended from Domhnall son of the King of Munster who took part in the battle of Clontarf in 1014. They were originally in West Cork, but having been driven into Kerry by the MacCarthys, they became very powerful in that county, and a district called Onaght O'Donoghue perpetuates their occupation. The sept split into two branches, the head of one being styled O'Donoghue Mor, with his seat on Lough Leine at Ross Castle (still one of the tourist attractions near Killarney); the other was O'Donoghue of the Glen. O'Donoghue Mor estates were confiscated during the Elizabethan wars, but O'Donoghue of the Glen held on at Glenflesk and the present head of the family is one of the few Chiefs of the Name recognized officially in Ireland as eligible to use that designation, I.e. to be called in popular parlance "The O'Donoghue". Geoffrey O'Donoghue of the Glen, one of the leading Gaelic poets and scholars of the seventeenth century, if not himself chief of the Name was most probably son of the chieftain Geoffrey O'Donoghue (d. 1678). Another minor O'Donoghue sept belonged to Ossory but these are now called Dunphy. A hundred years ago the peasantry there were still O'Donoghue, and Dunphy was "genteel". Dunphy, however, is recorded in the census of 1659 as one of the principal Irish names in the barony of Iverk, Co. Kilkenny. Like all the great Irish families O'Donoghues distinguished themselves in the armies of continental powers in the eighteenth century. In Spain the name became O'Donoju - Juan O' Donoju (1751-1821) was the last Spanish ruler of Mexico. Donnchadh O Donnchaddha founded Jerpoint Abbey at the end of the twelfth century. Several O'Donoghues distinguished themselves in the nineteenth century in politics and literature. John O'Donoghue (1812-1893) was the author of A Historical Memoir of the O'Briens and other works; Patrick Donahoe (1811-1901) was founder and first editor of the Boston Pilot, while David James O'Donoghue (1866-1917), author of The Poets of Ireland etc., was a well-known librarian and research worker. 2. Hello, I have been doing genealogy research on my great grandmother's surname Dumphy for almost ten years. What I am noticing is that sometimes Dumphy has also been incorrectly spelled Dunphy which can be very confusing. I have obtained Naturalization papers filled out with the surname Dumphy but the signature was clearly spelled Dunphy. Should I also research the surname Dunphy to try and find my great grandmother even though her surname was Dumphy? Has anyone else had this problem? Searching for Mary Dumphy born in Canada possibly Woodstock, Ontario June of 1850. Thank you. Susan

Possibly these people are all related somehow. I don't know where Harry's family originally came from. All I know is his mother was born in Ohio and her name was Millie( don't know her last name yet). We need to keep this in mind to see if something surfaces with these people. According to the Ledgers from Fairmont Children's Home in Alliance, Ohio, Harry Dumphy was born 10 MArch 1889, his brother James was born 7 Sept. 1891, Francis was born 21 Nov. 1893 and Elisabeth ( my grandmother) was born 21 Nov. 1895. Their mother Millie was born 19 Sept. 1867 and she died 1 June 1897. All four children were placed in the Children's home. The father's name was not listed but the ledgers state that he was alive. He evidently didn't think he could care for the children so he left them there. Two were adopted, Francis and my grandmother. Harry and James were indentured out to families. Harry ran away from the family that had him and he went ba! ck to the children's home. Anyways, I won't give up trying to find out what happened to them.........Thanks. Debbie

But I have a mystery concerning the Dunphy family. My grandmother was born very close to the same area where your grandmother was born, which is Alliance, Ohio. Canton is right next to it. Anyways, she was born Elisabeth Dunphy and her mother died when she was around 18 months old. She had three older brothers, Harry the oldest was almost 8, James was around 6 and Francis almost 3, and all four children were places in the Fairmont Children's Home in Alliance, Ohio. The ledger information that I received stated that their father was still living but he evidently couldn't care for the children. I found their mother's death record. She was Millie Dunphy who died on June 1, 1897 in Alliance, Ohio. Records show she also was born in Alliance. My grandmother ended up being adopted before she was two. Her name was changed to Mary Elisabeth Madden. She was born on Nov. 22, 1895. If you think we may have a connection ! please contact me. I don't have any idea of the father's name.
