Surnames: Dunphy,Smith,Young Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BmT.2ACEB/192.2.1.1 Message Board Post: HAPPY NEW YEAR! I've been working at the Dunphy search for about over a year now.I have search LDS and I have a death certificate of my grandfather Francis Xavier Dunphy December 6,1890 and died August 5,1966 Warren County,NY.I've gone only once to see his grave( and his name is spelled Dunphy ) He and his ex-wife,my grandmother Isabelle Rothenhoffer of Maryland are buried in the same cemetery in Warren County,NY. My mom remembers hearing about when my grandfather came over from Ireland that he was dressed up like a girl to stay with the family. And,my mom also remembers hearing that my grandfather was a very sick when he came and the people of Ellis Island almost didn't let the family come through because of Francis illness. On his death certificate it states that he was born in New York City,NY s/o Harry and Mary McKever-Dunphy.My mom's brother told me that instead of naturalization papers being filled out,it just appears that Francis Xavier Dunphy was born in New York City,NY. Ex.(my gggrandfather's pension record states that he was also born in New York City,NY in 1823,while his death certificate reads that he was born in Canada.I have spoken to a few people about this and their reply was that in order for my gggrandfather to receive his pension that he said that he was born in New York City,NY.If he had said that he as born in Canada,he wouldn't have been able to collect his pension when he was mustered from the army in 1866.) My grandfather had no birth certificate and the baptismal certificate that he received in Trenton,NJ for employment was burned up in a church in NJ.Wonder if they had copies???

Baker. Allen and Mary A. Baker has a son Oscar Baker. Oscar's birth certificate states Allen Baker and Mary Adelaide (b ca 1827) as parents. I think the Adelaide is a middle name and Alice Dumphey or Dunphey may be Mary's mother. Census also states that Mary was born in Vermont and Alice was born in Canada. Alice may have had a son named Samuel Oscar Dunphey. Any thing here sound familiar?

I know that Manhattan,Queens,Bronx,Staten Island,Brooklyn are all part of New York City. The information that my uncle had given me was that his father spoke in the irish tongue, that he was born in Ireland, came to Ellis Island with his two sisters and mom,and they lived some place in New York City.I know for a fact that my grandfather was married once before to a Young from Queens County. And,truely believe that her first name was Gertude. And,as much as I disbelieve in census records,in 1920's census record of Queens County,NY Gertrude is missing from the family and my grandfather was listed as the name Dumphy, with Caroline,Dorothy,Florence Young.Caroline was the d/o Catherine Ludwig of College Point,NY. My ggrandfather was Arthur Smith who married Lillian Garant. The family were all born in Canada.Arthur was part Inuit and Scotchman. My mom said that he was a tall red headed man.My ggrandmother later remarried to a Philip Knickerbocker. The family is originally from Saratoga,NY. My grandmother's side of the family were horse breeders and horse racers. My grandparents met in NJ,at Sinclair horse farm, where my grandfather worked. My grandmother's brother raced horses for a living at Saratoga Raced Tarck in NYS and in Bellmont.I assume that my grandmother and her brother went looking for a horse down there.December 1920,my grandparents married in NJ.

I know of my ggrandparents Daniel Dunphy(b.1894,1895) and his wife Ida Alexander. I was excited to find this Daniel Dunphy b. 1871 on the census- I am certain he is a relation (my gg grandfather?). My next step is getting in touch with an Aunt who still lives in Bklyn and then vital records. I am quite new to this and have to focus on family line at a time- it looks like this is a lifelong process..... by the way my father was Daniel Dunphy (1947-2003) and my name is Daniel too, Sam is a nickname. P.S. I happen to have SMith too- my gggrandmother Catharine had a second marriage(1890?) to a Frederick Smith, her first marriage produced my ggrandmother Annie (b. 1881 d.1921). The big mystery is Annies father which we hope to find in vital records.

Surnames: Dunphy,Smith,Young Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BmT.2ACEB/192.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Thank you so much for the reply. As much as I disagree with census records( I feel they are not 100% accurate) for the reason is they have my grandfather listed as being born in NJ.I have also seen his name listed as being born in NY.The story goes( and I will stick to it unless I see otherwise),my mom and her family say that their father had always said that he was born in Kilkenny,Ireland, came over to Ellis Island when he was a young boy with his mother MaryAnn and his two sisters,Agnes and Mary.My grandmother told my mom that my grandfather was dressed like a girl so he could stay with the family( they wouldn't get split up).My mom's mother also had said that the Dunphys almost weren't allowed into the states because my grandfather was a sick child. The family lived in New York City,NY.It is told that my ggrandfather came to New York City,NY and had left my ggrandmother and his children, headed out west to pan for gold never to return. My grandfather Francis Dunphy did live i! n New York City,NY.He married a woman by the last name of Young. It is believed that her first name was Gertrude,d/o Jacob and Caroline Ludwig-Young of College Point,NY.My grandfather and his first wife lived at the home of her father's in Queens County,NY.They had 4 children,2 girls and 2 boys."unknown" Young had died before 1920 of blood poisoning. The children were raised by the Youngs in NJ and had moved out west to California. My grandfather married my grandmother Isabelle Smith in NJ in 1920.They had 8 children who were all born in NJ. The name Dunphy was changed alot over the years. In my family the name was spelled Dunphy it was never spelled Dunfee or Dunphey.According to information I have my ggrandmother's grave stone reads Dumphy. My uncle(my mom's brother),had mentioned that some of our Dunphy ancestors had settled in Massachusetts. My grandfather's death certificate reads: Francis Xavier Dunphy born in New York City,NY December 6,1890 and died August 5,1966 in Warren County,NY.Parents were:Harry and Mary Ann McKever Dunphy. My grandfather has no birth certificate and his baptismal certifcate burned up in a church fire,Trenton,NJ.My mom can remember hearing her parents argue of the fact that he had a hard time finding work,he had no proof of where he was born.My mom tells me that he had a "Broage or Broge" accent. My grandfather's family was catholic.
