Until recently, the earliest record I had of my Dunn's was the 1860 census for Hurley, Ulster County, NY. That record showed the following: Thomas Dunn (my gg grandfather) age 40, born Ireland. Was a stonecutter. Margaret Dunn (my gg grandmother) age 32, born Ireland. Mary Dunn (my g grandmother) age 6, born NYS. Michael Dunn age 2, born NYS. Catherine Dunn age 5 months, born NYS. The 1870 census shows another son, Martin, age 8. My g grandmother marries a James Carroll and they have 4 children in Hurley. In the 1880 census the Carroll family is living in Troy, NY and in early 1881 my gg grandmother Mary Dunn Carroll and two of her children die in Troy in a smallpox epidemic. Thomas Dunn dies later in the year 1881, possibly in Troy. Margaret Finn Dunn dies in Troy in December 1885. Catherine Dunn dies in Troy in 1934 and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston. Her gravestone also has the names and dates for Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn Dunn but St. Mary's says they are not buried there. Michael Dunn dies in Norwich, NY in 1922 and Martin Dunn dies in Norwich, NY in 1927. One of the death certificates says that Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn Dunn were born in Queens County (now county Laois) Ireland. Up to now I assumed incorrectly that Thomas and Margaret were married in Ireland prior to coming to New York State. Recently I was looking at the 1850 census for Hurley and I think I found my Thomas Dunn listed. Record shows: Thomas Dunn - Age 30, born about 1820 Ireland - Was a quarryman. This is the right age for my Thomas. At the same address was a Mary Dunn, age 36 and a James Dunn, age 20, also a quarryman. I then looked to try and find a Margaret Finn in the census and there were two possible listings. Margaret Finn, born 1828 Ireland, Cambridge, Washington County Margaret Finn, born 1828 Ireland, Wallkill, Orange County Either one of them could be my gg grandmother. My questions now are: 1. Who was Mary Dunn and James Dunn? Were they siblings of Thomas and what happened to them? 2. Where were Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn married. Marriage would have been about 1852 or 1853. 3. Margaret Finn Dunn dies in Troy in 1885 and the newspaper obit says burial was in Rondout, NY. St. Mary's in Kingston says she is not buried there. What other cemeteries in the area would be considered Rondout. I would assume she is buried with her husband Thomas. Would love to hear from anyone researching the Dunn/Finn names in this area.
