    1. Re: [Dunn] Dunn Family - Devon
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Dunn, Cornhill Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunn/4028.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Are you still looking for the Dunns/Cornhills? Quite by chance, researching my Kent Cornhills, I have come across the Brixham families. William Dunn who married Rhoda Cornhill in 1846 appears to have died young. There is a death in 1857 in St Thomas, but the 1861 census info rules this one out. This one is the most likely: FreeBMD qe Dec 1860 Dunn William Henry Totnes 5b 120 Rhoda pretty swiftly married John White Moon Marriages qe Dec 1860 Dunn Rhoda St Thomas 5b 148 Moon John White St Thomas 5b 148 In 1861 they are in Cornwall - from this you will see why the 1857 death is unlikely! 1861 England Census Name: John Moon Age: 28 Estimated birth year: abt 1833 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Rhoda Gender: Male Where born: St Stephens, Cornwall, England Civil parish: Maker Town: Kingsand County/Island: Cornwall Country: England Street address: Fore Street Occupation: Mason Condition as to marriage: Married Registration district: St Germans Sub-registration district: Anthony ED, institution, or vessel: 4e Household schedule number: 39 Household Members: Name Age Anne Dun 7 Francis Dun 4 George Dun 10 Maria Dun 2 John Moon 28 Rhoda Moon 30 The Dunn children are listed as sons- and daughters-in-law, which was the old way of denoting step-children, and everyone born Brixham except John Moon himself, who was Cornwall born. The youngest Dunn child is only 2, so William could not have died before 1858. There is no trace at all of any of the family in 1871, and I have looked everywhere in England and Wales, using the children's names as well as John and Rhoda, with and without the surnames. I am 99% certain they were not in England or Wales. Did they briefly emigrate? Were they in Ireland? >From Cornwall in 1861 via place/places unknown, the family ended up in Cardiff by 1874: Deaths qe Dec 1874 MOON John White 41 Cardiff 11a 202 In 1875, Ann Penny Dunn (her middle name provides the absolute link back to Brixham) married Jonathan William Little in Cardiff and proceeded to have many Little children! In 1881, they are living in Roath, Cardiff, and with them is Rhoda Moon, mother-in-law of John Little. John is a labourer, born in Ottery, Devon. She is also with them in Roath in 1891, but died before 1901: Deaths qe Dec 1895 Moon Rhoda 68 Cardiff 11a 179 What became of all the Dunn children is hard to discover. I cannot find any info on Maria Dunn at all. Ann Penny Dunn married John Little as above. Francis Dunn married in Cardiff in qe Jun 1881 to either Eliza Richards or Hannah Ellis, but I can't trace him beyond that date. George Cornhill Dunn also married in Cardiff in the qe Sep 1886 to either Mary Ann Knight or Sarah Ann Tucker. But again, I can't trace him beyond his marriage. I have found a likely death, but where he was in the meantime, I have no idea! Deaths qe Mar 1911 Dunn George C 60 Cardiff 11a 230 Hope this is all useful to you and you haven't already discovered it all for yourself! Best regards Wendy Durham Doing Cornhills in Kent, and trying to see if there is a link between Brixham and Faversham/Whitstable.
