These tests indicate we are very closely related, but no one can make definite genealogical connections. I believe these men all descend from forebears in Dunn's Creek (Cape Fear NC) or are closely related to them. Can you help me identify Dunn surnamed men you know descend from Benjamin Dunn who will be willing to undergo the genetic testing. Benjamin Dunn who went to GA with his wife Sarah almost certainly belongs to this group, but we have not yet been able to connect him in public records. It's a simple, non-invasive test, involving swabing the inside of one's mouth and sending the swab off to a lab. I believe we should use every means at our disposal in our genealogical research. Y-DNA testing for genealogical application is a new and rapidly developing tool for us. To date we have no DNA data from known desce! ndants of Benjamin Dunn. Our group's results are housed in the Johnson Co IL DNA website as many moved there from NC to TN to IL. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/johnsoncountyillinoisDNAproject/default.aspx Thank you for considering this request and also for the wonderful genealogical research you are doing. Richard I's eldest son was John II (Anson Co NC 1770s). Another son was William. John Dunn I had sons Richard II and Robert; these were millers. Richard II takes a 1750 patent for a mill tract on Rockfish Creek (part of Dunn's Creek settlement). He shows up in Moore County NC on a 1780 tax list where he owns a water-powered saw mill on Wet Creek. In the same tax list for Wet Creek are Richard III, Izehiah (mistranscription of Hezekiah), and Bartholomew Dunn. Richard Dunn III and Hezekiah Dunn moved into Montgomery Co NC in the 1790s. The original settlers of Dunn's Creek of the Cape Fear are named with a patents map in an article "Site of Dunn's Creek Quaker Meeting (c1750) Located", North Carolinian vol 5, p. 534ff. Other original Dunn's Creek settlers were Thomas Armstrong, Henry Atkinson, Charles an! d Gresham Benbow, John Berry, James and William Carver, John and Zebulon Clayton, John Elwell, Jonathan Evans, Thomas Finney, W. I've recently started a blog about my Family History, where you can learn more about what info I have. You can check it out at http://eastchicagodunns.blogspot.com. My Ella was the daughter of William Edward Dunn, who was my G grandfather. On his page of my blog you'll find the info I have about Ella, which is very little. If mine is the one you're asking about, the blog will likely be interesting to you, for I have a fair amount of info about this branch of the Dunns. Three cousins lived on the block in Fulton, an older son who was studing to be a mining engineer, a younger sister, who became a " Kentucky Colonel" for saving a drowing child, and a younger brother.Their father, I cannot remember his name worked on the railroad in the mail car. He may have been employed by the post office. Any way he sorted mail as the train traveled. May have had the route Fulton to Memphis. This was all in the late fifties. I remember meeting some relatives from Michigan at the funeral of Mac Layne? He had worked at the Singer company, wood products division and had retired and moved to Wingo or Water Valley. Not many of those names feature in our Dunn line, except the William one. Ours were Quakers with the bunch that came into GA from NC, and the names on land transactions all around the Dunns were the same names that went to GA with them. You're right about the grouping of names helping track a particular line. The oldest names I've been able to trace are Richard, John, Joseph, Jacob, Benjamin, Robert, William - all in Bladen and Cumberland Counties in NC. The earliest ones showed up there in early 1730s. Then after 1767, there are none of our folks in those areas. Some went to GA, others stayed in NC but in different counties. It's really too bad our line didn't have anything unusual like Drury and Gatewood. Those sort of stand out, don't they - much more than John, Benjamin and Thomas. Anyway, thanks for the info. I always wondered about it. Lanelle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She descends from that line and had= findings that seem to support that theory. There were multiple Thomas Dunn individuals arriving in the 1600s, and a number of other Dunns as well. I have a list. The unique names in that Essex VA line help a lot in research of later generations (Waters, Gatewood, Winifred, Drury). My Dunn line's DNA is an exact match with a descendant believed to be from the Essex William Dunn line. My William Dunn ancestor (believed to be the one who married Ann Newman) was the one in Richond Co VA N. Farnham Parish 1711-1720 across the river from Essex Co (S. Farnham). He was related to Walter Dunn dec'd 1698 (wife Mary Nutt)of Northumberland Co VA. Walter arrived on the boar 1650s. I think Walter was William's father, as the name Walter appears among William's descendants. Gary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Through several generations I've traced the line that I am in from NJ through MD and VA into Western PA. My grandfather J.L. Dunn (1860-1941) lived all his life in Dunns Station, PA. His decendants are having a family reunion this July. We're scattered all over the country. Those prior generations had BIG families. Lots of possibilities as to the line you're interested in.
