Record show Dorcas as being Dorcas Dunn 1/5/1884-8/25/1930 married to Floyd Byous. Maybe the mothers last name was Black and the father's Dunn, or I suppose the mother's name could have been Dunn, and she just referred to her daughter as Dorcas Black in reference to the father. Either way, its going to be difficult to figure out!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He recently passed away but before he did he would tell me about his father Clanton and meeting his grandfather in Louisiana. He told me the story of how his father was placed in an orphanage by his father because he was unable to raise all of the children on his own. He left the orphanage when he was young and joined a ship and eventually made it to California. He too had red hair, a trait that still runs in my family. I recall hearing the name Zuella but never really learned much about her or Uberta. I'd love to hear what you know. Author: patbonnie115 Surnames: Dunn, Grace Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunn/6523/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, folks; Summary: I have three questions: 1) I have an 1858 British death certificate that says the deceased was a "coffee hawker" What was a coffee hawker? If this is my GGG grandfather, he apparently gave up farming after emigrating from Ireland to England. Does that sound like a likely occupational change for an Irish immigrant in that era? 2) The death cert says he died of a "chest affection". Could this mean infection? If not, does anyone know what it might mean? 3) Does anyone have any suggestions as to how or where I might find more information about the Pierce DUNN below, info such as spouse, children and/or county of origin in Ireland? Details: After receiving the marriage record for my GG grandparents, Michael and Bridget Grace DUNN, who were born in Ireland circa 1830 and married in Glossop, Derbyshire, in 1853, I learned that Michael's father's name was Pierce DUNN and his occupation was recorded as "farmer". I did some research on Ancestry.com for "Pierce DUNN". The only reference I could find was the following: Name: Pierce DUNN Year of Registration: [of death] 1858 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Liverpool (1837-1934) County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 94 In one record, Pierce's grandson - Michael and Bridget's eldest son, Peter - was reportedly born in Lancashire and in another source as having been born in Glossop, Derbyshire, both in 1857. Their immigration record shows that Michael and Bridget departed from Liverpool when they emigrated in 1858, so in looking at the information above, my lightning-quick mind said, "Yes! Maybe this is my GGG grandfather!" Using the info from Ancestry.com, I have just received a copy of the death certificate for Pierce DUNN. Info shown on the certificate is as follows: - Source: General Registry Office, Registration District - Liverpool, 1858 Death in the Sub-district of Dale-Street, in the County of Lancaster; - When and where died: 17 June 1858, 5 Johnson Street; - Name: Pierce DUNN; - Sex: Male; - Age: 50 years [which would make him born about 1808]; - Occupation: Coffee Hawker - Cause of death: Chest Affection Certified - Signature, description and residence of attendant: Robert Johnson in attendance, 25 Duke Street, Liverpool - When registered: Eighteenth June, 1858 - Signature of registrar: George Pilkington Unfortunately I don't see anything in this document that definitively ties him into my family. Also, I'd hoped to see the names of his parents and/or spouse - and was very hopeful that there'd be some indication as to where in Ireland he originally came from. Having said that, the geography and the dates involved suggest that this is him. At this point, in the absence of information to the contrary, I presume this is, indeed, my Pierce Dunn. However, with your assistance, I'd really like to be more certain of that and also gather more information about him. Gratefully. She remembers that Dorcas' mother was indian, either Sioux or Cherokee, she went by 'states' names such as California and Texas, she and Dorcas' father were forbidden to marry although he was indian as well, and she named Dorcas after him using the names Dunn and my grandmother in law clearly remembers the last name (or first) Black .Dorcas Dunn went on to marry Floyd Byous, their daughter was Sarah Pearl and on down the line.
