    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Mystjm Surnames: Dunn Lafever Lefever Lefevre Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunn/2633.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Dunn line flows thru Putnam/DeKalb/White counties of middle TN. The earliest ancestor of this line, J Allen Dunn, b.1802 (VA or KY) married Catherine Lafever b.1805 KY of Pulaski, KY. His first two children were born in KY. By 1840 however, the family had moved to White Co.TN where he worked at his Father-in-law's pottery making business. By the 1870's two of his sons, including the eldest, John R Dunn b.1825 KY, had relocated to the Logan/Christian/Todd area of KY. While there, they also made salt glazed, utility pottery. I have never known the reason for this move, but there are several Dunn families in that area. I have speculated perhaps that some of them might be his Father's relatives. J Allen Dunn has eluded many years of attempts at determining his familial connections. The only evidence I have been able to find that he even existed, is the 1840 and 1850 White Co., TN census. If this prompts even a vague recollection for anyone researching the Dunn's, please let me know. I'm sorely needing a new angle. Thank you for your consideration, ~Lyn Dunn Milam Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Mystjm Surnames: Dunn Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunn/6396.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My apologies for the lapse of time, but life has conspired in such a way as to have prevented me from attending to one of my favorite activities for a number of months now. Gail, I have noted that your John Dunn ancestor was indeed in the same area of White Co., TN, around the same time as mine. Between the 1830 and 1840, yours moved on to Garrard Co., KY, while mine moved down from the Pulaski Co., KY area. Looking strictly at surnames per census, it gives the cursory impression that it was the same man and family, who was there in 1830, and that he remained. These two families appear to be totally unconnected to each other, even though the odds of sharing a relatively uncommon last name in such a sparsely populated area would seem to be remote. I think this has caused a lot of confusion for researchers of both lines. My Grandmother Dunn b. 1899, once told me that there were two or three distinct Dunn lines who came to the White Co., area at around the same time period, and even she was confused as to the particulars. There were several disruptions in the passing down of oral family histories due to the early deaths of parents and grandparents. Add in general illiteracy, and most information never had a chance to be forwarded to new generations. Gary, currently my Dunn lineage seems to have more in common with lineage II than any other line. However, this is still inconclusive, so my Father's line is "not yet assigned". I've been trying to get a living male descendant to take a more comprehensive DNA test, but they either find the cost prohibitive, or have concerns about privacy issues. It's become an "all I want for Christmas" kind of thing for me, but I feel confidant that one day soon, someone's curiosity is going to overcome other concerns. =) Thank you all your help, and all the many hours you put into researching this remarkable family. ~Lyn Dunn Milam Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It seems like we are cousins for some sort! My line is down from John Thomas, my great grandfather. I did not have any info on Jessie except his wife's name, Margaret - is that correct? Also I thought that Henry was Daniel's father and Drury wss his grandfather but was never able to confirm it. I thought that all Daniel's children except for James and Mary Linnie moved to Eastern AL. My father was born there and all the John Thomas's Children and family except for Charles Dunn moved to East Texas about 1893 or 4. My grandfather moved up to Oklahoma Territory. Does this match your information on the other members of the family? Did your branch stay in Georgia or did they move also? If Miss Winnifred Dunn (born 21 Dec 1727)married an unknown Mr. Jones when she was age 18, then that would have been in 1745. If that couple had a son in 1746 named James Jones, then he could have married Rachel Young (born about 1741) by 1764-1766 or so. "My" Mrs. Winnie (Jones?) Bennett was born 1766-1769. 1. Re: [Dunn] William Dunn Will Essex Co. Va.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Brown, Smith, Gatewood, Jones, Dunn, Bennett, Kidd, Boughan, Kemp Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.dunn/6486.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Some posts show that William Dunn, Junior married Winifred Waters, and they supposedly had a daughter who was named Winifred Dunn who married an unknown Mr. Jones. Assuming that the above is accurate (and I certainly have no reason to doubt it), I SUSPECT (albeit, no proof) that this unknown Mr. Jones and Winifred Dunn were the parents of the James Jones who married Rachel Young in Essex Co., VA (that marriage was probably circa-1760s, since Rachel was born in 1741). Note: Rachel Young was a daughter of Henry Young and Rachel Smith, and Rachel Young had a brother who was named Smith Young....among many other siblings. I also SUSPECT that the above James Jones and Rachel Young had a daughter of their own who was named Winifred Jones, and that this daughter "became" Mrs. Winifred Bennett (who we know named her own son Smith Bennett). Do you know what the SOURCE is that shows that Winifred Dunn did, in fact, marry an unknown Mr. Jones? Has anyone ever suggested just who that Mr. Jones MIGHT have been? Mrs. Winifred (Jones?) Bennett also had a daughter who was named Mary Bennett, and Mary married a John Brown in 1805. This strongly appears to have been the same overall Brown family as the much earlier Henry Brown "I" (who died in Essex about 1734) who had married Keziah Jones...Keziah was a daughter of an "early" Richard Jones (born 1600s) in the area. In addition, the above John Brown who married Mary Bennett also appears to be a member of the same overall Brown family as the Caty Brown who married a much later man who was also named Richard Jones (this marriage was in Essex Co., VA in the early-1800s, and I suspect that this Caty Brown was a sister of the above John Brown who married Mary Bennett). I wonder if this much later Richard Jones in Essex Co., VA was a son or grandson of James Jones and Rachel Young, and/or a descendant of Mrs. Winifred (Dunn) Jones? Speaking of the above Brown family, the Henry Boughan who witnessed the will of William Dunn, Senior was married to a Miss Brown from this same overall Brown family, and the Amb. (Ambrose) Jones who also witnessed the will was an apparent son of the older Richard Jones (born 1600s) mentioned above (i.e., the father of Mrs. Keziah (Jones) Brown). In closing, it strongly appears that the above John Brown who married Mary Bennett, as well as the above Caty Brown who married the later Richard Jones, were children of an older John Brown who married Mary Kidd (John and Mary married by at least 1785). That older John Brown deeded land in Essex Co., VA in the early-1800s to a Mrs. Jane (Gatewood) Dunn, and Jane was the widow of Thomas Dunn. MAYBE Jane was out of the William Gatewood who also witnessed the will of William Dunn, Senior. Note: Around 1830 or so, there was a young man named Kemp Gatewood who was taken-in by a Brown family in Essex Co., VA. I never have found any Gatewood researcher, however, who is certain as to whose son this boy was (though the Gatewoods and Kemps had intermaried earlier, as I recall). Comments on any of the above? Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.
