    3. Kathy, Sorry, when I said working on a long shot I really meant it!! :) HA HA. My Great Grandfather James F. Young was b. March 22, 1864 in Iowa. His parents were James C. Young b. in Wisc (no date) and Elizabeth (Betsy ) Lindsay b. in Iowa (no date). Elizabeth Lindsay's mother was Ruth Ann Dunn according to an old family letter I found. I haven't been able to find anything on the Young's or Lindsay's so I decided to take a chance on the Dunn's. 2. If the posts to this list are correct 99% of all DUNN families are descended from this Thomas Dunn. I find this very questionable. This Dunn line has been known for a number of years. If you throw in an extra William and James when needed then I guess we all descend from the Thomas from England. I know not where this leaves all the Irish, Scots , Scotch Irish, Welsh and other Dunn derivatives. Can this Thomas be the elusive ADAM for all lines? It is very easy to build a chain if you start at both ends and add a link each time one is needed to fill a gap. This is not a very good way to trace a family line. James

    3. Hullo-- my Dun certainly doesn't descend from this line. Maybe I'm in the 1%, but I don't think so. My Duns are Scottish, and wide-flung throughout Scotland. I've met more than a dozen other Dun researchers who are distantly related to one another, but have ZERO connection to your Thomas Dunn. But I'm sure he's a great guy, nonetheless. He came to the U.S. in 1620, at the age of 14,onboard the Temperance(also named Sampson). He was listed as a servant to Sir George Yeardley, living at Flower Dieu Plantation in James City Virginia. 3. Kathy, try http://www.nara.gov/research/ordering/ordrfrms.html Sound like you are looking for forms 85 or 86. 85 will get you any pension applications and pursuant documents and letters. 86 will get you muster records and any letters added to the record. 2. No, not the pension file. FHC stands for Family History Center or the Latter Day Saints.(Mormons) I found the information on my gr-grandfather at Ancestry.com plus there are other Civil War sites that have him listed. Kathy

    3. The National Archives (NARA) has all of the enlistment records for north and south and all of the Northern Pension Records. The National Government did not authorize pensions for the CSA soldiers. Any pension they or their widows received was from the state of residence at the time of the application. In Georgia the State supplied a pension and some of the counties had a poor list which was used to support impovrished senior citizens. One of my Dunn uncles, Larkin was found on the Poor list for Floyd County GA, it also provided his death date as proof of when they ceased to pay him. Deborah Byrd

    2. HI List, Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Civil War application of my gr-grandfather? I would like to have a copy of the actual document. I know that you can get it at FHC but the one by me does not have a reader printer yet. Would the state where he enlisted have a copy of it or did all of them have to be sent to Washington, DC? Dennis Dunn, age 21, enlist date: 10 October 1861, enlist place: Marshall, MI., enlist rank: Corpl. Enlisted: D Co 14th Inf Reg. MI. Army: Union Kathy

    1. Re: [DUNN] Civil War
    2. "Civil War application"? Do you mean Civil War Pension Application? If so, the original is probably at NARA, the National Archives & Research Administration. Curious as to what your "FHC" stands for. And where you managed to obtain the enlistment information on Dennis Dunn, what publication?
