You are right about so many precious records being destroyed during the Civil War. I feel so very lucky that all of the records of my paternal side (Sheffield) were spared threw the Civil and Revolutionary Wars. What really amazes me is my father's family were all Confederates from Georgia and Texas (this would be the side I thought would have been difficult if not impossible to locate) and my mother's side were all Unionist (the side I figured would have been the easiest to trace and has been the most difficult). Thank you so much for you kind words and help! Brenda Gayle Sheffield

Greetings, I totally understand sometimes when I finally find someone that is working on the same families that I am I get so excited I want to jump up and down. I have several families that are at brickwalls. Dunn's finally opened up about 6 months ago and I have been so beside myself. I think some of these people just fell from the sky and landed where we found them because their tracks certainly are well hidden. The records in the south are so bad also and that doesn't help. So many of them were destoyed during the civil war and not a lot of records were kept anyway. If I can ever get the family out of SC it is not so bad documenting the families. Have a good weekend. Sorry Brenda but I do not have anything on Jacob at all. All of my Dunn's that I have found thus far were in Va, TN, NC and SC but Jacob could have been the son of one of them and I just have not found him yet. I think all the Dunn's in VA are related. Best guess on his father would be either James, Martin A., Sr., Reuben or William. Their father's name was John. Essex County would be a good County to start in. Because the time frame you are working on my Dunn's are mostly in that county before moving on. Hope this helps.
