    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hlT.2ACEB/1557.1689.2.3 Message Board Post: The Thomas Dunn you refer to was born in Wythe Co., Virginia, on the date you specify. His family then moved west on the way to Arkansas, but Tom got sick. They left him with a family in the area (Tennessee), the Beelers. He eventually married one of the Beeler daughters, Margaret. Don't know if this helps - I'm still stumped on who his parents were, as well as the other brothers that ditched him. Can't find them (I don't think) in Arkansas or Virginia. If anyone knows of them, please email me.

I'm not absolutely sure where he was born although he came here from Stirlingshire, Edinburg, Scotland in the early 1820's on a sailing vessel. They were shipwrecked off the Bermuda Islands with their family and spent 6 weeks there waiting for another vessel to bring them to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The family had in their possession a stone carved in the shape of a book which they brought from where they were shipwrecked. On arrival at Saint John, they came up the St. John River to Oak Point and by way of Hamilton Mountain into Jerusalem where they located on farms off the Manor lots. (This is in the area that is the present day Base Gagetown - the largest army training camp in Canada). They had 9 children as follows: George, William, Andrew, John, David, Hugh, Margaret, James, and Walter. George married Frances Stewart and these would be my great, great grandparents. They were Presbyterians. Any information anyone could share with me would be very much appreciated. 2. I believe that these Dunns may be ancestors of my Samuel Marion Dunn (my great grandfather), who lived in Greene and Hamblen Counties, TN, fought in the Civil War on the Northern side, and resided at the time of his death in Whitesburg, TN. Will be glad to give you all of the information I have on this line (Samuel Marion was born about 1818 in Lincoln County, NC; died after February 23, 1871; married Julia Ann Blanton, daughter of John Blanton and Rebecca Hughes and granddaughter of Burwell Blanton, a Revolutionary soldier; Samuel and Julia's children were Dan, Ellen, James A., John, Phillip, Charlotte, Rebecca, Noah, and Samuel. John married (1)Anna Babb and (2)Sarah Jane Swatzel; my mother Bonnie Lucille Dunn Holt, was one of John's 13 children by Sarah Swatzel; John, incidentally, was born in Cleveland County, NC, which adjoins Greene County, TN, one of Tennessee's oldest counties and once a part of NC). 3. List Members: Attention: Those researching John and Anna Marion Martin Dunn of Albemarle Co. and descendants. Those researching the Monroe Co., (W)V Dunns. >From Virginia Soldiers of 1776, Vol. 1 Virginia Soldiers of 1776 Affidavits. year 1779, Thomas Dunn of Albemarle county entered service for three years trader Captain Marks in whose Company Hut-son Martin was Lieutenant. Thomas Dunn was First Sergeant, and that he died while in service; that William Dunn, decd. was the oldest brother of said Thomas Dunn, decd. and that Edmund Dunn, applicant for warrant for bounty land is the son of said William Dunn, decd. Signed and sworn to before Robert Coalter, J. of P. Winesses, John Dunn, Andrew Beirne, John H. Vawter, and Henry Erskine. The entry previous states... Virginia Soldiers of 1776 Affidavits page 241 Monroe county, Va. John Dunn deposed that about the [p. 241] Virginia Soldiers of 1776 Affidavits. In council, 4 Mar 1831. It is advised that the heirs of Thomas Dunn be allowed L.B. for his services as a First Sergeant in the Contl. line. John Floyd, Governor I feel this may prove that the John Dunn who settles in Monroe Co., (W)V, abt. 1782 may well be the son of John & Anna Martin Dunn of Albemarle Co., VA and that Edmund Dunn who marries Polly Harvey in Monroe Co., in 1805 is the son William Dunn, oldest son of John & Anna Martin Dunn of Albemarle Co., VA. If anyone is near a genealogical library in Virginia or West Virginia, may I request help in checking to see if extant and unabstracted originals exist at the Library of Virginia Above information can be seen at Ancestry.com, under Virginia Soldiers of 1776 database. I also have information that William Dunn, oldest child of John & Anna Martin Dunn married Mary Bledsoe and they went to Ky in 1789. Two of their children were killed by Indians. They went first to Fayette Co. and then to Garrard Co., Ky. They travelled with William Bledsoe Jr. and sons, Mary Bledsoe's family. This information from Bledsoe researchers. Collin's History of Kentucky is said to have a report of this Indian attack. ANY help or input welcome.
