However, there is something very odd about the Manitowoc/ Waterloo connection. I think that we may have some relationship going on here. The Franks and Francis's that I have are the wrong generation for this, but I had several Wisconsin to Waterloo/Hudson/Voorhies Iowa relatives. Let's go further with this and rule out any possibilities. Thanks, Trea

I know Dunn's from Utica, NY. John Joseph Dunn ran a bar in Utica. His mother died when he was ten. His father put him and siblings in an orphan's home in Utica. His mother's name was Julia Delaney, His father, Michael Dunne....it changed to Dunn either in his father or grand-father's lifetime. John had a sister Anna and we think he had a brother Thomas. There were other siblings as well. John J. Dunn died December 25, 1977 in Utica, New York. He was married to Grace Hoban. He had four children, John Jr. William, Eileen and Dorothy, all deceased. Is any of this useful to you? Please let me know. Thanks Jamie

Mother's parents were Alonzo "Lonnie" Dunn and Maggie (unknown). Maggie died approx 1911 in Yazoo,MS leaving two daughters. There was a son Henry who died as a small child. After the funeral, Lonnie disappeared and neighbors took Fanny (changed name to Frances in mid-twenties) and Willola into their home. The two girls were sent to Palmer Orphanage in Columbus, MS in 1911 or 1912. Mother was 5 or 6 yrs.old and Willola was about 3. Lonnie came to the orphanage around 1916 to see the girls and he had remarried. Believed to be living in Alabama at that time. Never seen or heard from since that day. Records were destroyed by fire at the orphanage. Mississippi did not keep good records during this time so I am having great difficulty tracing my roots. Maybe there are descendants from the second marriage? I would appreciate any help you can give me or tell me where to search. Sincerely, Murlene Richardson Anderson mjs-tool@telia.com OR mjs-tool@mpinet.net
I,too, have read about this being in connection with the Melungeons. There are several websites concerning them. I think the one man who came up with the connection in the first place was a man named Brent McKinley. I think that was his name. Very interesting, though. I have a somewhat rare blood disease (not fatal), Thalassemia minor, that doctors say is usually only seen in people of Mediterrean ancestry. I know of no ancestor from that area, so I'm polling all my ancestral lines for clues. My brother's daughter, my sister, and her younger son also have it. Do you have a clue for me? Thanks. Pat: I am a Dunn descendant and saw your e-mail. I live in the Raleigh, NC area and have access to census records. I will see if I can find some information for you. It may be a week or two, but I will check it out. Are any of your Dunns from Ohio? Cheryl in NC
Thank you sooo much. I did find online one possible in the 1860 Census for Beaufort County. They have Eliga Dunn 40 with a daughter Elizabeth (Bettie??) who is 6 years old. That was before I got her Death Certificate. I also know that women love to make themselves younger than they are so it might be that my mother didn't really know her year of birth. I found her and my grandfather in the 1900 Census and then she gives her year of birth as 1854 So Who knows what the true year is. Any help would be appreciated. We are going to try and make a vacation trip up that way sometime this summer to go through the library to see if I can find any more out there. Thanks again for any help on this matter. It says on the back of the photo: “Aunt Amanda Dunn". I enjoy buying lovely old pictures like these (with names on the back and locations on the front) from antique dealers and locating descendants/family members so that I can re-unite them, for only my costs, with people who will treasure them. The picture was taken in approximately 1885-90 + or - a few years, and it was taken by the Watson Brothers Studio in Fairbury, Illinois. Fairbury is in Livingston Co. Amanda has her dark hair pulled up in a bun on top of her head, and I estimate that she is approximately 40 years old. The picture is in very good condition and is an original (not a copy). The picture is 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" and is mounted on heavy cardboard as was typical during those days. If Amanda Dunn is in your family line or if you can relate to the Dunn family in the area of Livingston Co., IL, please contact me directly at margerice@prodigy.net and I will get back to you shortly.
