Hello Gail You wrote "" as for "bondsmen",did she mean they were "bonded" out over here to pay for passage? "" . If I am not mistaken a man who was a bondsman in the UK , was actually an apprentice , and as such either he or his sponsor ( some relative or sometimes the parish ) would have to pay a sum of money to the craftsman concerned . This gave the craftsman the right to tell his apprentice when and where he would work , in exchange for board and lodgings and for teaching him the " trade " . Best wishes Bob

The "John Dunn" mystery is getting very interesting. I,too, have a John Dunn. He's also my "brickwall". He was b. abt 1780 in Virginia. He married a woman named Mary "Polly" ???,who was b.in So.Carolina abt 1790. They married about 1805,perhaps.They had 7 children, four of which all said they were b.in SC,too. I found a John Dunn, living in Pendleton Dist.SC in 1810 Census. they had a boy and a girl, both under 5(matches with 2 known children). They later moved to White Co.Tenn. I have found them on the 1830 Census with the 7 known children. They moved or had to move(money problems, apparently)abt 1832,to Hardin Co.Ky. 3 children married there. Then the whole family, minus one married son & ;his wife,to Breckinridge Co.Ky(maybe coming thru Grayson Co.on the way). The children's names are: James,Nancy,Azariah,Martha(these all b.SC)Littleton(now, that's a SC name..wasn't there a Gov. --Revolutionary times? William Lyttleton?),Benjamen & Eli(my grgrgrandfather. These names pop up all the time and we also have some of their children with odd names like James Riley Dunn.(was Riley someone's maiden name? Polly maybe?)We also had an Armisted Dunn, many Francis Marions,& a couple of Forrests. James Dunn,s/o John & Polly, was the one who stayed in Hardin Co.Ky,then later moved to Grayson Co.Ky.The small amount clues we have are: one elderly lady always said that we had a John Dunn, whose brother died in Ireland, and he moved to America.(can't be ours;but, could be his father); and another said that the Dunns lived in Gr.Britain, til they were thrown out. They went to Ireland, where they were dirt poor. She said they were "bondsmen". Are they talking back as far as the Jacobite Revolution? These Dunns were Scots,so the story could fit. as for "bondsmen",did she mean they were "bonded" out over here to pay for passage? I've got these people from John & Polly forward;but,we,like many of you,end with John in Va & SC. I put this on your message,Joe,because you apparently are from SC. Thought something would ring a bell. Oh,yes, also, our Dunns are "Irish-Indians" Black hair, blue eyes, tall & slender. I think Eastern Cherokee. I think maybe Mary"Polly" was the Indian.Pendleton dist bordered the Cherokee District in SC in early 1800's. Looking for information regarding any Dunns from New York City. Thanks, Bob Bengtsson grandfather was Joseph Arthur Dunn brother's name was Walter Dunn Family stories link my great-great or ggggrandfather to Buffalo Bill Cody.
We had James b. 1724 Ireland, having Ch. Martha, Samuel Fowler, John(1752), James jr., Nathaniel, Margaret, Alexander L. Jane and Jean. In the S.C. library we found James to Rockbridge C. Va. served in RW., son John (no wife known)had John, b. 1752 - no wife known), then John W. b. 1770,m unknown, then Rachel Porter in 1811, then William Dunn b. 1810 Henry Co. Ky.then James Willard Dunn, then Clarence Christopher, my grandfather. When they were in Pa. we found them mostly in Northampton. Roslyn
I think we explored this Mary Peters/John Dunn connection. Unfortunately we couldn't find a connection. In fact we never have found the wife of John Dunn who served on "frontiers of this county"(Northampton, Pa). Roslyn-----
