    1. [DUNN] Hugh Dunn is Irish? An old, debated question!
    2. Mary G
    3. I recently received the biography of Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr., from "Indiana and the Indianians", Vol. 5, by Jacob Piatt Dunn, published 1919 by the American Historical Society. The line goes like this: Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr. Jacob Piatt Dunn, Sr. Judge Isaac Dunn and wife, Frances Piatt Isaac Dunn was the son of Hugh Dunn and Mercy ? (possibly Dunn, too). The biography states that the Dunns of Middlesex (New Jersey) were descendants of Hugh Dunn, "an Irish Baptist exhorter, who was one of the founders of the Baptist Church of Piscataway Township in 1689, and who left to his family a legacy of Bible names. There were 23 Dunns in the New Jersey Revolutionary troops from Middlesex, 8 commissioned officers and 15 privates, and every one of them had a Bible name except Capt. Hugh Dunn. The family tradition is that Hugh Dunn, the father of Judge Isaac Dunn, emigrated from Ireland and married his cousin, Mercy Dunn, of the Middlesex family." The above mentioned Irish Baptist exhorter has to be Hugh Dunn I, b. abt. 1641, d. 1694, married Elizabeth Drake. My records state he "was instrumental in organizing the Baptist Church of Piscataway in 1689. This church still stands today as a landmark with services still being held." No mention of it being "Irish Baptist" though. I have this line from Hugh Dunn I to Hugh Dunn V, the father of Judge Isaac Dunn. The Hughs are connected, but I haven't been able to prove their relationships without a doubt as yet. That the Jacob Piatt Dunn biography says it was only Mercy who "was of the Middlesex family" really surprised me. I know of only one Mercy Dunn, b. 1740, daughter of Micajah Dunn and Elizabeth Dunham, who married Jonathan Fitz-Randolph. Oddly enough, Elizabeth Dunham was the daugher of Jonathan Dunham and Jane Piatt (Pyatt). I don't know if or how Jane Piatt Dunham is related to Frances Piatt, Isaac Dunn's wife. Since Mercy was the daughter of Micajah, she would descend from Hugh I (Hugh I, Samuel, Micajah, Mercy). If anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them. What exactly is a "Bible name?" That all the children were named after people in the Bible? Surnames: Dun; Dunne; Dunn; Gieger Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hlT.2ACEB/2894 Message Board Post: I seek information on an A.J. Dun or Dunn who was in southern MS around the end of the US Civil War... There is a listing in the Zachariah Gieger Bible for a child that appears to be Mateopolis Clifton Dun (it could be Ma Teopolis William Dun) who was born in 1864 and it says "first Son of A.J. Dun" The handwriting is very hard to read because they used a Quill and the ink smudged... Zachariah Gieger lived in Covington County near Collins. The entry is in a section with other non-family members and we presumed that the entry was for a Slave-girl who was brought by Zachariah's father, Jessie Gieger, when he migrated from GA about 1814. She was supposed to be 10 years old at that time and a nursemaid to Zachariah, however, recently discovered copies of the handwritten pages reveal that the Transcribers miss-read the entry when they sent the transcription to the MS Genealogical Society for publication in "Cemetery and Bible Records" Vol II in 1954...They also left out the "First Son of A.J. Dun" I have checked the "Covington County Cemetery Census" which was published in 2000 but neither A.J. Dun nor Mateopolis Clifton Dun is included... Would like to correspond privately with anyone who can help identify these individuals...

    3. Hello - My name is Sue Kay & I've just started a DUNN-UK list with Rootsweb .. The DUNN name is very common in the UK .. There are times, however, because of emmigration, etc, when the ordinary DUNN list & the DUNN-UK list will intertwine & that is good .. To susbcribe or unsubscribe you do just the same as you do with the normal DUNN list, only the name is DUNN-UK .. ie - DUNN-UK-L-request@rootsweb.com or DUNN-UK-D-request@rootsweb.com Good researchings ...
