    1. Dunn/Finn Names
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath
    3. Until recently, the earliest record I had of my Dunn's was the 1860 census for Hurley, Ulster County, NY. That record showed the following: Thomas Dunn (my gg grandfather) age 40, born Ireland. Was a stonecutter. Margaret Dunn (my gg grandmother) age 32, born Ireland. Mary Dunn (my g grandmother) age 6, born NYS. Michael Dunn age 2, born NYS. Catherine Dunn age 5 months, born NYS. The 1870 census shows another son, Martin, age 8. My g grandmother marries a James Carroll and they have 4 children in Hurley. In the 1880 census the Carroll family is living in Troy, NY and in early 1881 my gg grandmother Mary Dunn Carroll and two of her children die in Troy in a smallpox epidemic. Thomas Dunn dies later in the year 1881, possibly in Troy. Margaret Finn Dunn dies in Troy in December 1885. Catherine Dunn dies in Troy in 1934 and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston. Her gravestone also has the names and dates for Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn Dunn but St. Mary's says they are not buried there. Michael Dunn dies in Norwich, NY in 1922 and Martin Dunn dies in Norwich, NY in 1927. One of the death certificates says that Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn Dunn were born in Queens County (now county Laois) Ireland. Up to now I assumed incorrectly that Thomas and Margaret were married in Ireland prior to coming to New York State. Recently I was looking at the 1850 census for Hurley and I think I found my Thomas Dunn listed. Record shows: Thomas Dunn - Age 30, born about 1820 Ireland - Was a quarryman. This is the right age for my Thomas. At the same address was a Mary Dunn, age 36 and a James Dunn, age 20, also a quarryman. I then looked to try and find a Margaret Finn in the census and there were two possible listings. Margaret Finn, born 1828 Ireland, Cambridge, Washington County Margaret Finn, born 1828 Ireland, Wallkill, Orange County Either one of them could be my gg grandmother. My questions now are: 1. Who was Mary Dunn and James Dunn? Were they siblings of Thomas and what happened to them? 2. Where were Thomas Dunn and Margaret Finn married. Marriage would have been about 1852 or 1853. 3. Margaret Finn Dunn dies in Troy in 1885 and the newspaper obit says burial was in Rondout, NY. St. Mary's in Kingston says she is not buried there. What other cemeteries in the area would be considered Rondout. I would assume she is buried with her husband Thomas. Would love to hear from anyone researching the Dunn/Finn names in this area. Regards, Bill McGrath Clifton Park, NY

I am just passing along information that may be useful. DUNN, WILLIAM Rank and organization: Quartermaster, U.S. Navy. Born: Maine. Accredited to: Maine. G.O. No.: 59, 22 June 1865. Citation: On board the U.S.S. Monadnock in action during several attacks on Fort Fisher, 24 and 25 December 1864; and 13, 14, and 15 January 1865. With his ship anchored well inshore to insure perfect range against the severe fire of rebel guns, Dunn continued his duties when the vessel was at anchor, as her propellers were kept in motion to make her turrets bear, and the shooting away of her chain might have caused her to ground. Disdainful of shelter despite severe weather conditions, he inspired his shipmates and contributed to the success of his vessel in reducing the enemy guns to silence.

    3. Would like to find more information on Malendeth (sometimes called Calvin) Alfred Dunn. He was born in KS but moved with his father's family in 1889 to Payne Co., OK as that part of OK opened for settlement. He married a lady by the name of Mable Louise (?) (b.1884 TX). They had two children: Delores (b.June 1908 OK) and Vernon L. (b. March 1910 OK). Vernon died in 1932 while visiting his aunt and 2 uncles in NM. I don't know what became of Delores or the parents. Malendeth and his family were on the 1910 census in Beaver County, OK. He signed his WW I draft registration card on 9-12-1918. The 1920 census records in every state have been searched exhaustively and nothing is found of this family - presumably they may have died during the flu pandemic of 1918-1919. I am endeavoring to located when/where Malendeth died and where he was buried. There were numerous uncles, nephews, nieces to this line.

    2. That's what I get fo trying to write to too many lists at the same time. The correct info is: The list name is changing from DUNN-L to just DUNN. So you may subscribe or unsub by sending your request to: [email protected] with one exception. If you wish to subscribe in Digest mode you must send your subscribe request to [email protected] . You may also continue sending your requests as you always have--either will work. The word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE must be included in the subject and may also be included in the message body. Sorry! Joan, admin

    1. Admin Notice: Please Read
    2. RootsWeb is in the process of switching over to new upgraded list management software. Our list is scheduled to be migrated to the new system tomorrow if all goes well. For list subscribers, the changeover should be smooth. The changes primarily involve the administration tools that keep the list running behind the scenes. The list name is changing from DUNN-L to just DUNN. So you may subscribe or unsub by sending your request to: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) with one exception. If you wish to subscribe in Digest mode you must send your subscribe request to [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . You may also continue sending your requests as you always have--either will work. The word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE must be included in the subject and may also be included in the message body. Digest subscribers will notice some changes to the list digests. New instructions will be added to the digests -- please read them. In addition, the digest volume and issue number may be different (out of sequence) from what you had been receiving. If your digests arrive in a different format than you are used to and you would like it changed, contact me privately at the list admin address: [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . Also, if you run into any unusual or confusing occurrences with mail from this list that could possibly be related to the chageover, let me know. If you use email headers to filter list mail to a special folder in your email program you may need to check whether your filters will need tweaking under the new system. AOL and some other ISPs have not been delivering mail reliably so far to the migrated lists--so AOLers may want to complain to the AOL postmaster if they have problems. Others should let their ISPs know this is mail they wish to receive. If you previously subscribed to the list in both L and D modes using the same email address you will find that you are no longer subbed in Digest mode. The new software doesn't permit the same address to be subbed in both L and D modes. Therefore, if you wish to receive both modes, you will need to subscribe to the digests using a different email address. Please continue to send your queries, data, and responses to the list as usual. It is a great time to post a new query to try to break down those brick walls. Thanks! Joan, admin [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])

    3. I am endeavoring to locate the final resting place for two members of a Dunn family that lived in the Oklaoma Panhandle. The two people I am looking for are: DUNN, Malendeth Alfred (born 2-20-1881 KS) - sometimes called Calvin DUNN, Mable Louise (born 1884 TX) Malendeth (sometimes called Calvin) and his family are shown on the 1910 census in Beaver County, Oklahoma, Grand Valley Township. He registered for the draft for WW I on 9-12-1918 Malendeth had two children (Delores C. and Vernon L.). Vernon died in 1932 in Torrance Co., NM while he was visiting relatives there. Would like to make contact with descendants/researchers of the Dunn line. Perhaps we can fill in some gaps for one another. My endeavor is to determine when Malendeth died and where he is buried.

I would date this picture about 1917 because the boys look to be 3 1/2 and 5 1/2.
