I too am looking for information on Jeptha Dunn and his family. Jeptha would be my GGG Grandfather. All I have on him is a possible birth date in 1883, his wife (Susan Mittower) and one child listed (Rowley Jeptha Dunn..my GG Grandfather). Any information you have would be much appreciated. cheers Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The transcription for your father says he was born 20 Mar 1926 which differs from the SSDI record that he was born 20 Mar 1925. If you send for his SS-5 the discrepancy shouldn't matter as long as you have his SSN (434-38-0465). I didn't see that your mother is or isn't buried there as well. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polkcountytxconnections/GreenfieldCem.html Do you know the names of your father's parents? There are 2 Andrew Dunn's listed in the 1930 census in Louisianna of the same age. One's parents are Ike and Nelly, the other one's parents are William and Ruth. Let me know if either one is your grandparents and I'll post the census data back to you. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It has an enormous amount of info (including access to actual census images from every census taken through 1930)...but it's not cheap (I don't remember exactly but I want to say $200-300/year). Anyway, I may have misled you on the 1930 census thing. I found a Social Security Death Index (SSDI) record for Bettye L. Dunn that states her DOB as 11 Oct 1935 and her DOD as 8 Feb 2003 in Livingston, Polk County, TX. Her SSN is 467-06-2763 and it was issued in 1970 in Texas. If that is your mother, then you should disregard the 1930 census stuff I gave you and request a copy of your mother's Form SS-5 (Social Security Card Application) from the IRS. You can google and find out how to order this. I think it costs about $20-30 and it takes about 6 weeks to get it. But it will be a copy of the SSA application that your mother filled out and signed and it should list the names of her parents. It's a good place to start. There is so much mystery surrounding my mother's parents. You would think with all my brothers and sisters they would know more but they don't. One of my brothers said she was born in 1937. However, we can't find a birth certificate. So she may have been older than we thought if she was born in 1930. She had a brother and sister supposedly. The sister was Bennie Ruth (now Bennie Ruth Douglas) and the Brother was Uncle L.T...LOL. That's all we know about him. How do I get access to what you get access to? Is there a better way for me to research this information? Again, thank you so much. I'm actually leaps and bounds ahead of where I was. I don't know when your mother was born, but if that is you, there is a 1930 census that shows a Betty L Gordon, daughter of Alice Gordon: 1930 Precinct 2, Hardin County, TX District 2 Kirchall, George head 48 m 26 Ger Ger Ger immigrated 1888 Selma mother 76 wd 21 Ger Ger Ger Marie dau 18 s TX Ger Ger Earl son 12 s TX Ger Ger Gordon, Alice dau 19 m TX Ger Ger Betty L grand-dau <1 s TX TX TX I believe the Kirchall name should actually be Kirshoff. Basically the census says that George is the head of household (probably widowed), 48yrs old, was born in Germany, and immigrated to the US in 1888. Selma is George's mother (widowed) and 76yrs old. Marie and Earl are George's children. Alice is also George's daughter but is or has been married and her daughter is Betty L who was apparently born in 1930. So, if the name Kirshoff is familiar to you, then this is Betty is probably your mother and Alice is your grandmother. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know it's hard when your parents have passed away and you have no information. But if you have any cousins on the Dunn side (through any relatives of your father), you should follow up with them to see what they might know. Otherwise, try to determine when and where your parents were born (their death records or Social Security application records can help), and check for birth records, the marriage record for your parents, city directories, and any military records if your father served in the military. If you know your parents lived in small towns, look for Dunns still living in the area and write to them. They may be your cousins. I am not related to this family--but from experience I know that you will have more luck if you write down everything you can about your parents and their lives, before trying to go backwards in time. Good luck to you, Samuel. If your parents were born before 1930 and you will email me with what you know about their general birthdates/places, I will try to look them up for you on the census. I'm new to this so please be patient with my lack of knowledge. I'm trying to just gain understanding as to my families heritage. My mother's maiden name is Bettye Louise Caleb. My father's name is Andrew James Dunn. I noticed there is a person by the name of Caleb Dunn Shimer that existed at one time. I thought the chances of Caleb and Dunn being the name of ONE person was astronomical. I also noticed a lot of the names in his lineage are just like our names now. I was hoping that naming us was word of mouth passed down from generation to generation. My father is deceased and supposedly from Louisiana. My mother is deceased and I'm not quite sure where she was from. However, I believe she has always resided in Texas. She has a sister named Bennie Ruth Caleb-Douglas. I'm trying to make the connection between Indiana (Caleb Dunn Shimer) and Louisiana (Andrew James Dunn). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
