My goal is to find out who is the mother of my GGrandmother. I have her birth extract which states that Euphemia Couper was born April 18th 1885, in Causewayhead. States father as John Finlay Couper, grocer's salesman, mother as Rebecca Stirling, listed as present. Info on their marriage is May 2nd 1884, Glasgow. There were written places that has been crossed out and stamped w/ a different name. Guessing that the boundries changed, or something. Anyway, the many place names appearing are Dalmuir, Logie, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Strirling & Perth. I have a document that places John F. Couper at 314 Blythswood Terrace, Clydeb?mk in June 1901. Have found all but mother in the 1891 census. John F. is listed as a married border, age 32, in Kirkcaldy & Abbotshall, Fife. Effie & her brother John are listed as borders, aged 5 & 4, of Christina Drysdale of Perth Road, Dunblane, Perth. I have documentation that signed children over to ?????(no name) in 1893, signed by their Dad. His address stated then was 31 Smith Street, Hillhead, Glasgow. Okay, here's the scoop... Family Rumour is that The mother died and the children were adopted by her sister Rebecca Mary Gray Stirling who was married to Robert McBride Stirling. My GGrandmother knew and remembered these people. They are who she considered her parents. That would make the mother a Gray (but the birth extract states that she was a Stirling). Which, if is rumour, they were adopted by family, would make the mother the sister of Robert Stirling, not Rebecca Gray. I have info on Robert McBride Stirling, but have not been ablr to find any relation to a Rebecca. I have no info on Rebecca mary Gray Stirling. This couple was married in 1895 and listed at 72 Kinsore Rd, Newlands, Glasgow S.E. in 1945. He was a partner in a Jeweler shop at 38 Queen St., Glasgow named Stirling & Stewart. I believe I have found John Finlay Couper's family in 1881 census, at 1 Falshaw St. South Leith, Edinburgh. His Dad is John Couper & his Mom is Margaret Brown. Am guessing that I have Rebecca Stirling's family (Mom on Effie's birth extract) at 537 Govan Rd. Govan, Lanark (It was mentioned by a distant relative that the Stirlings were very prominent people in the Govan area.) The names seem to make sense also... Dad being John Stirling & Mom being Euphemia Kennedy (Turnbull in 1st marriage) Stirling. The children are listed as Rebecca, Euphemia & John (certainly family naming ??). I believe this to be my GGandmother's mother, but have no way of puting her with John Finlay Couper. Have not been able to find documentation of the marriage listed on Effie's birth extract. The GRO couldn't find anything either. SO... if anyone can help I would be most grateful!!
