Hello! This is my first post to the list. I am a professor in Ohio, and also a Canadian citizen quite recently re-located to the USA. My great- grandfather, Hugh Magnus Bell, was a master tailor in Cardross from 1900 to 1910. I think that means he ran an establishment with employees prior to moving to Canada in 1910 . My grandfather, Hugh MacLachlan Bell went to school in Cardross about 1900-1910, I think, and belonged to the "Boys' Brigade", which would point to a church connection (Grandad Hugh was Presbyterian by christening, I know, although his Invernesshire maternal cousins were Roman Catholic). At the age of about l8, he was employed at the local newspaper in Helensburgh, the nearest town. During this time he was also a member of the Argyle & Southern Highlanders militia unit, and - I recall him saying - accompanied a group to London for something in connection with Queen Victoria 's ... Diamond Jubilee? (I hope I have that last bit straight) He and his Dad , Hugh Magnus Bell, up-rooted to Canada in 1912 following the death of Hugh Magnus's wife, Christina Campbell. Christina or Christiona was a Campbell of Invernesshire, and is buried at a cemetery in Lochgilphead. I do not know the name of the ship my grandfather anf great-grandfather took to Canada. Would there be a Passenger List of Ocean passenger vessels from Scotland I could consult? My grandad had a brother, Alexander, who died very young. I think that's all I know, forgive me if I exceeded the bounds of information discussed on List. In any event, I am beginning to try to build our Bell family tree - and would be most grateful for any leads anyone may have or may in future discover as they pursue their own kin. Cheers, Andrew Hugh Taylor
