Hello from New Zealand Are you able to help us please with our question?? Back in about the early 1920s - the BOWMANs / family were known to have owned a section of land near the Singer Sewing Machine factory on Kilbowie Road, Dunbartonshire..... Andrew BOWMAN and wife Isa were living in the locality for a while... Is it possible to find out where that was and if their are still BOWMANs in the area... Kind regards from Maree S. Gordon, Matamata, New Zealand <tappets@clear.net.nz>
Hi Maree I don't know know if there are any of your Bowman descendants still in Clydebank area but I cannot resist making a few comments about the name Bowman. Bow is a Scots word meaning a herd of cattle... usually cows. A bowman or bouman is a person who takes care of the cattle on a farm so it literally means a cowboy. A bowhouse is a cattle shed and there are a number of place names around Scotland and Northern England that bear this name. Bow or the Norse word bu owed its origin to the Norse settlers along the east coast of Britain. In North Yorkshire there is a place originally named bowhuis which was corrupted over the years to its current name Booze. So there it is, all you will ever need to know about the name Bowman and were afraid to ask! Aefauldlie Robin Hallam Duncan British Columbia
