Dear Listers I am seeking assistance in relation to my family. I seem to have hit a brick wall. For some time now, I have been trying to find the parents and siblings of Malcolm McCALLUM who married Mary STEWART. They had the following children: Robert (1826 Barony - 1908 Maryborough, Vic Australia) m Emma Broggreff in Maryborough, Victoria Australia John (1828 Barony - death unknown) James (1831 Barony - death unknown) Duncan (1834 Barony - death and marriage unknown) Catherine (1838 Barony - Died 1915, Prahran Victoria, Australia) married (1867 in Victoria) to John Bell born in Glasgow. Donald (1836 Barony - death and marriage unknown) So, to my knowledge, only Robert and his sister Catherine came to Australia. Robert came as a purser/steward on a ship and was registered as a miner on the birth certificates of his first children adn then as a farmer on the latter certificates. The ship on which he came is said to be the Clarence, but I have not been able to find a ship of that name that arrived in Sydney or Victoria in about 1853 - which is when my mother has heard he arrived in Australia. My mother, who is the granddaughter of Robert McCallum (she is now 98) has 'heard' that the McCALLUMs came from around Loch Lomond (not sure where) and as a result, she was surprised when I found the place of birth of the children, her grandfather included. it may be that they came from around that area prior to their marriage. I have found a marriage of Malcolm McCallum and Mary Stewart in Durness in May 1820. Not sure if this is the same Malcolm and Mary. My mother always commented that we were entitled to wear the tartan of the Clan Stewart of Appin, and as far as I can see, the Stewarts of Appin were not from around Durness area. Any clues or ideas on how I could further reseasrch this family would be much appreciated. Regards Libby McMillan (Victoria, Australia)
