Hello Hope There was a PURDIE family originating in Ulster which settled in Cardross (near Dumbarton) in the 1840s, with descendants aplenty to the present day. Do you think this might be the one? The 1851 Census for Cardross (Enumeration Book 3):- Ardardan Offices* Robert Purdy [sic]** Hd Mar 27 Agricultural Labourer Born Ireland Matilda Wife Mar 24 " " John Son 2 " D'tonshire,Cardross *Offices - i.e. outbuildings for farm or estate workers; sometimes included an "office", or room for the conduct of business, distribution of wages, etc. **The name was thereafter spelled "Purdie" Also at Ardardan Offices were large numbers of Garvens. If I recall correctly, Matilda Purdie's maiden name was Garven. There are Johns, Roberts, Hughs and Matildas in subsequent generations. A Hugh Purdie painted one of the rooms in my house in 1978. I'm afraid he passed away some years ago.
