In 1875 my great great aunt was orphaned in Dumbarton. Two of her siblings went to live with relatives in Renton and Eastwood..., Renfrewshire. This 10 year old child died 15 years later in Australia of consumption that she had had since childhood and after being in New South Wales for 15 years. She was not an assisted immigrant to Australia. My query: How did she get to Australia? Would she have been sent by some philanthropic organisation or orphanage who thought she would benefit from the warmer climate? I would appreciate any information on such institutions that existed at the time. I had my hopes raised that Quarriers Homes from Bridge of Weir may have been involved but they apparently didn't start sending children to Australia until pre WW2. Thank you. Dominique Young
