My grandfather, Hugh Miller McCALLUM (born 1883 Helensburgh, son of Donald McCALLUM & Margaret CUTHILL), in his memoirs, mentioned that he and a couple of close friends one day rowed across from Helensburgh to Roseneath and had a look at a yacht, the "Shamrock" moored at Roseneath which either had been or was about to challenge for the America's Cup. Granddad said it was challenging for the "Lipton Cup" but I think he meant the yacht was owned by Sir ? Lipton and challenging for the America's Cup. As the America's Cup is being contested in Auckland NZ at present (between New Zealand and Italy), this reminded me that I have been meaning to narrow down the date when Granddad and his friends went over to Roseneath. (They got back to Helensburgh safely but it took them a bit longer than they thought it would). Does anyone on the list know when this yacht was moored at Roseneath or what year the "Shamrock" challenged for the Cup (it lost of course). I presume it would be somewhere around 1900, and that Granddad would have been in his late teens or perhaps early 20s. My Grandfather emigrated to NZ in 1911 after several years of ill-health, in the hope that the climate would be better for him (he lived into his 80s), so I would think that the rowing over to Roseneath would be some years earlier. Any ideas on the dates? Lesley Isntone Invercargill New Zealand
