Kim, you have a good question here and I surely wish I could help you with it...only to say that in genealogy, anything can happen and anything is possible.....since I'm working on about 20 lines, I have run into this kind of thing a number of times.....your best bet is to connect with someone else in the family that perhaps might have more information than you do. The obvious thing, of course, is that Catherine had two marriages, so Kerr was either a maiden name or another married name, so if you can get her marriage record, it should read "spinster" or widow or whatever....did you get into the actual marriage entry to find that out, or were you just looking into the index...that would not give that kind of information.
