I too have used Scotlandspeople.com and think they have a terrible set up! I agree that William Sr. and John were possibly brothers. My connection is through William and Margaret's son John McKinlay b. 29 May 1881 in Milngavie. Our family heard that he had ties to Edinburgh as did his wife Elizabeth Balderson. John with older brother William and mother Jessie immigrated to Pawtucket RI in 1899 in work in the textile mills. John sent for Elizabeth in 1904 and they married later that year. It is mystery how they met with the only clue being their common tie to Edinburgh! I'll keep trying too and share all that I find.
