Hi Val The Thompson family opened a shipyard in Clydebank around 1871,they had a previous one in Govan.The engine and boiler works was already in Clydebank. Are you sure they lived in Clydebank? Maybe they lived in the Glasgow Lanarkshire area,as workers were transported to the Thompson yard to work,from the Govan area. The 1871 census might be helpful,and if they were there in 1881,the census is indexed. Was your grandfather definitely born in Clydebank?what was his Christian name?His religion?
