    3. Hi ThuranX I understand your frustration with finding the right six year old Mary Campbell in the 1851 census. It took me a fair time before I sorted out my Campbell family in Dunbartonshire. One problem I had was that they were always moving back and forth across the Clyde between Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, Ayreshire, Lanarkshire and Rothesay in Buteshire. All these counties were just a few miles apart along the Clyde and river transportation was inexpensive. Your Mary's birth is just 18 months after the Great Disruption and birth/baptismal records in Scotland are very poor in Scotland from the Great Disruption of early 1844 up until statuatory registration started in 1855. There is less than a 50/50 chance that there is any record of Mary's baptism or birth. Searching the 1851 and 1861 census is not as difficult as you suggest since it is possible to narrow down the age and location of the search and most important include the firsts name of another family member ie your Archibald. If you send me your email address I will send you a 30 March 1851 entry for Greenock of a 6 year old Mary Campbell with a father, 44 year old widower Archibald Campbell. They are not indicated as born in Dumbarton but there is always the possibility of a error depending on who the informant was. It was the custom at that time for a woman to be with her Mother for the birth of her first child and not at her usual place or town of residence. 3. I have been watching the goings and comings of here, in the hope that something might just pop up with my line in it. This one of ThuranX, seems interesting in that I have a Mary Campbell in my line. MY Mary Watson Campbell b/ August 1870. Lanark, daughter of Thomas Campbell a Warehouseman, b/1837 Lanark, and Beatrice McCrie b/ 1836 Lanark. (Thomas Campbell was the son of John Campbell a Bookseller and married to Janet (Jane) Liddell.) Mary Watson Campbell (she was my Grandmother) married William Baillie Hair b/1862. There is a house at Cardross.whixh I think is in .Dumbartonshire which she lived in the majority of her life called 'Tighmonadh'.. It is a beautiful old mansion, and still very much lived in ! Maybe there is a connection between yours and mine ? robbiej.....Jan W... NZ.
