I am sending this to both the Dunbartonshire & Stirlingshire lists in the hope that some kind person may be able to help. My query relates to the parties to a deed of conveyance signed in 1874 and registered in Stirling (I have a copy from the Scottish Record Office published in a book on the RUSSELL family from Denny Stirlingshire). It was signed by my ancestor William CUTHILL on behalf of himself, and the family of his wife Alison (or Ellison) RUSSELL for the transfer of property at Denny which had been owned by Alison Russell's father and grandfather, both named William RUSSELL and deceased. The deed was signed in Helensburgh Dunbartonshire (as William and Alison CUTHILL were managing the farm as Camis Eskan near Cardross at the time) and was witnessed by John CUTHILL described as a salesman to Messrs Arthur & Co Warehousemen Queen Street Glasgow, and by John FRY, described as stationmaster, Neilston, Glasgow. Could someone check the 1871 and 1881 censuses for this John FRY who probably lived at Neilston to see what if any family he had with him. I believe he may be the widower of Isabel RUSSELL, daughter of William RUSSELL, and that there should be at least one child. Isabel had probably died by 1974 when the dead was signed as she is not listed as among the surviving children of William RUSSELL junior. Her husband John FRY may have been born somewhere in England. Any sighting of a likely John CUTHILL, salesman, either living in Glasgow or perhaps commuting to work in Glasgow on the railway from Dunbartonshire (Helensburgh, Cardross, Dumbarton etc) in 1871 or 1881 would also be appreciated.
