    3. Hello Donald Haldane, or "The Haldane" as it is known locally, is a Local Council Housing scheme largely built in the 1950s and 1960s. It lies to the immediate north of Jamestown, and to the east of Balloch proper. There is a school there known as Haldane Primary School. Most of the houses are terraces or blocks of flats (i.e. apartments). There are plenty of good folk in the Haldane, but it gets a bad name sometimes from a minority who are at the fringes of society, deal in drugs, and so on. While the housing estate may be comparatively recent, the name "Haldane" is not, deriving from the Mill o' Haldane, which in turn took its name from the one-time proprietors of the land, the Haldanes of Gleneagles who, at the partition of The Lennox in 1425, acquired this portion of land. I hope this is of interest. Best wishes Arthur Arthur F.
